Under 17 Football White Championship.

St Manchan Gaels 1—10  Ballinamere Durrow 2---6.

St Manchan Gaels finished their group games in this year’s Bridge House Hotel under 17 Championship with a one point win on Wednesday. This victory and wins over Na Fianna and Gracefield and a loss to Shamrocks leaves St Manchan Gaels on six points in the group and they will play against Shamrocks in the final in Clara on Saturday 29th September at 1.45pm.

Bridge House Hotel Under13 White Championship Shield Final.

St Manchan Gaels came out on the wrong side of a 6—8 to 1—6 score in the under 13 Shield Final in Durrow on Friday evening. Gracefield were the stronger team and are to be congratulated on their victory. It was a great achievement for both St Manchan Gaels teams to reach their respective finals at under 13 level.

Tullamore Court Hotel Senior B Football Championship.

Ballycumber will face near neighbours Tubber in the semi final in Bord na Mona O’Connor Park on Saturday 29th September at 3pm.

Dinner Dance in the Bridge House Hotel on Friday 19th October to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of winning the Offaly Senior Football Championship in 1968.

In the lead up to the Dinner Dance celebrations it is interesting to examine the history of the Club. The following is a report of the 1935 Junior Football final from the archive of the Midland Tribune.The final was not played until March 29th 1936, it was played in Kilcormac against Cloghan, and was described as a keenly contested match.                                                                                                                      The standard of play was “injured” by the wind and rain which swept the pitch throughout the game The first half was very even, but in the second half Ballycumber seemed to be definitely the better team and for the last fifteen minutes they held a three point lead, which Cloghan seemed unable to reduce. However in the very last minute of the game Cloghan snatched a draw, the result of a cleverly scored goal. The game opened briskly and a series of exchanges left the position even. Cloghan did not seem too duly upset by the strong wind, and by low kicking and quick passing managed to attack on a number of occasions. One of those attacks resulted in a goal, when Carroll got away on the right wing and passed to John Rafferty for the latter to run forward and punch the ball into the goal. Strenuous play followed, Maloney for Ballycumber, being conspicuous in the centre. After about fifteen minutes play Ballycumber equalised with a good goal per Quinn from the side. The Cloghan defence were now subject to severe pressure, and time and again the Ballycumber forwards seemed on the verge of a score. A free to Ballycumber  made Cloghan’s position more difficult, and eventually the defence broke down under the sustained pressure and Connolly scored a goal. Just before half time, Ballycumber scored a point from a melee near the goalmouth. The half time score was  Ballycumber 2gls 1pt. Cloghan 1gl

Ballycumber made a great start in the second half, when a splendid bout of combination play ended in a point. Cloghan attacked and forced a fifty which was well played by McIntyre, but the forwards could not penetrate the defence. Ballycumber seemed to improve as the game went on, and with Cloghan’s attacks going wide, the chances seemed to be against them. Another fifty to Cloghan put them attacking, but nothing resulted, and a few minutes later good manoeuvering by Dunne saw Ballycumber on the offensive, The Cloghan defence, however managed to hold out, and play went to the other end, where Cloghan scored a badly needed point. In a few seconds the ball was back again, the hop from a high kick went clean over the crossbar, to give Cloghan another point. Two fifties to Cloghan followed, but Ballycumber were defending with great determination and the forwards could not break through. With the time running out Ballycumber played with increasing confidence and a win for them seemed certain. However, Cloghan made one last determined effort and a really good movement right down the field, ended in John Rafferty once again punching the ball to give Cloghan the equalising score.

An objection to the fact that Cloghan fielded three unregistered players was upheld and Ballycumber were declared champions. It was generally agreed that honours lay where they were most deserved. 

Coffee Morning.

The annual Coffee morning to raise funds for Offaly Hospice will be held in Gussies on Thursday morning 20th September. All funds raised in Offaly remain in Offaly. 

The Grand Canal Walk.

Club Faithful officially launched the Grand Canal Walk at the Faithful Fields  which will take place on Saturday 27th October and will start and finish in Bord na Mona O’Connor Park. Walkers will have the option of completing a 5k, 10k, or 25k along the Grand Canal either towards Edenderry or Ferbane. All Clubs are asked to participate in this fundraiser which will raise funds for Crumlin Childrens Hospital and Offaly GAA. Ladies Football.

Well done to St Manchans Ladies Football Club who brought more than 100 ladies to Croke Park on Sunday to the All Ireland Ladies Football Finals. They were part of the biggest crowd at the Finals ever.

Sympathy.

Ballycumber GAA Club wishes to express our sincere sympathy to Kieran Egan and family, Thumbeagh, on the very sad death of Riona.

And our deepest sympathy to the Currie and Quinn families on the death of Vincent Currie in Tyrone and to the Hackett family on the death of Lar Hackett, Clara formerly Dernagun.

 Dance Classes

Learn how to Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot and Line Dance. Classes held every Monday night in Ballycumber Community Centre. Beginners classes from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. Intermediates from 9.30 to 10.30. Dancing for all afterwards.

Lotto.

The numbers drawn this week were 1,5,7,22. No jackpot winner, two match three winners. Next week’s draw will be held in The Gav Inn on Monday night at 10 o’clock for a jackpot of 8550euros.
