Ballycumber club notes

July 10, 2018

Tullamore Court Hotel Senior B Football Championship.

Ballycumber 3-7   Erin Rovers 2-8.

Ballycumber got their second win of the championship with a hard earned victory over neighbours Erin Rovers in the sunshine in Ferbane on Saturday evening. Adrian Kelly got the first point of the game after receiving pass from Nigel Grennan. Erin Rovers replied with a point from a free. Nigel kicked a great point to put Ballycumber back in the lead. The Pullough men caught the Ballycumber defence cold with a quickly taken free and a sharp interplay between two forwards to put the ball in the corner of the net. Erin Rovers added two more points and were dominating the exchanges. Gary Larkin kicked a badly needed long range point and again Erin Rovers scored from a narrow angle. Adrian Kelly pointed a free and Cormac Quinn kicked a point for Ballycumber. But, Erin Rovers kept their lead 1-5 to 0-6 until half time with two further points.

A long scoreless spell at the start of the second half was brought to an abrupt end when Nigel Grennan was fouled in the " Square" and Cormac Quinn put the ball in the net after his shot was saved but he reacted quickest to score a goal from the rebound. A minute later Luke Gavin Mangan gave the ball to Nigel and he managed to put the ball through a crowded goalmouth and into the net. Erin Rovers replied with a point from play. Luke Gavin Mangan dispossessed his marker and made ground along the end line. He saw corner back Clive Keena running towards the goal area. Luke punched the ball across the goal mouth for the in rushing Clive to score his first goal in senior championship football. Erin Rovers then took back control of the game and scored a well worked goal to put the game in the melting pot. They added two points from frees to leave the score at 3-6 to 2-8. With the breeze strengthening Ballycumber were struggling to get out of their defence. Eventually John Corcoran won the ball at midfield and raced through the heart of the defence and his shot just made it's way over the bar to put two points between the sides. Erin Rovers tried hard to get a goal but the Ballycumber defence held firm and saw out the remaining minutes of the game.

Junior B Football Championship.

Ballycumber 1-8 Rhode 1-13.

Ballycumber tasted defeat for the first time in this year's championship when the loss of Peter Dunne, David Ayres, Mel Guinan, Brian Halligan and Corey Tyrell put pressure on an already tight on numbers panel. Rhode scored three points and Conrad Casey pointed a free for the home side early in the game. Rhode added two more to one in reply by Bosco Guinan. Approaching half time the Rhode corner forward got in behind the full back line and put the ball in the net. They added another point to leave the half time score at 1-6 to 0-2.

Aided by the breeze in the second half Ballycumber played much better and points from Conrad, Fergal Daly, Peter Flynn, Bosco Guinan and a goal from Paul Kelly gave the home side a chance at winning the game. But Rhode had players who knew how to manage the situation and they took most of their scoring chances to win on a score of 1-13 to 1-8.
