The late Paddy McGinley

February 22, 2017

It was with great sadness and deep regret that news of the death of the late Paddy McGinley last weekend was greeted in the parish of Killeevan as with his passing the club has lost the last connection with the great double winning team of 1944.

Aged 97, the late Paddy passed to his eternal reward on Sunday last and his remains were interred in Drogheda on Tuesday. 1944 was the last occasion that Killeevan won the senior football championship when they defeated Castleblayney in what was described as a dour final in Monaghan, during which McGinley, a member of An Garda Siochana, scored a point, and for his services to the club in those heady days Paddy McGinley was presented with the Hall of Fame some years back.

It is worth noting the lineout of the Killeevan team in that historic final: Tommy Crowe, Frank Meehan, Mick Matthews, Eugene McGeough, John Coogan, Mick Martin, Patsy McGuinness, Pat McCarville, Paddy McGinley, Phil Lee, Frank Rock, Hugh Martin, John McCarville, Hugh Donnelly. (Paddy McGinley RIP 1920 to 2017).
