Club championships up and running

May 19, 2016

Last weekend saw the start of the 2016 championship season with 7 games in all down for decision.

Two games were played in the Universal Graphics sponsored junior football championship and five in the Greenfield Foods senior football championship.

JFC:

The junior football championship got off to something of an inauspicious start with a totally one-sided affair between Corduff and Sean McDermotts which the latter won convincingly by 4-41 to 1-4 but in the second game in Inniskeen it was a much more entertaining and closely fought affair between Blackhill and Clones, with Blackhill staging a strong finish to get their drive for junior honours this year off to a winning start.

Last year's defeated county finalists Monaghan Harps had the privilege of opening this year's senior series when they took on Magheracloone in Aughnamullen on Saturday evening but it was a disappointing display by the Harps with Magheracloone winning comfortably. The four games on Sunday were played as two double bills in Castleblayney and Scotstown. The meeting of Scotstown and Doohamlet proved a fairly easy victory for the county champions, winning by 1-20 to 1-7.

In the double bill in Scotstown on Sunday evening, Ballybay and Clontibret produced what was probably the best game in the series at the weekend, a closely contested affair that was in the balance right to the very finish with Ballybay shading the issue by the narrowest of margins, Ballybay 1-13, Clontibret 1-12.

KILLEEVAN LAUNCH CENTENARY HISTORY

Killeevan Sarsfield's club rounded off their centenary celebrations with the launch of the official history of the club, "Killeevan Sarsfield's: A Centenary History 1915-2015 and Parish Record" by JP Graham. Club chairman Dominic McPhillips extended a warm welcome to all present particularly to those who had travelled and spoke of the great achievement that it was to have the efforts of the founding fathers and the successive generations of people recorded and documented and he thanked the author and described the work involved as a daunting task. The club was fortunate to have the Director General of the GAA, Paraic Duffy, present to officially launch the publication and he spoke of being privileged and the honour it was to have been invited to do so. He described the publication as very impressive and spoke of the importance of the club, using the recently deceased GAA President Jack Boothman as an example, because he was first and foremost a club man. He complimented the Killeevan club on maintaining their GAA tradition for over 100 years and said that in reflecting on the past it can help the club to shape the future. "History lets us know what and who we are and it can help to pass on the strengths and values of the GAA in the parish". The book is on sale in Martin's Londis, Newbliss, Matthews of Clones, McMahon's in Scotstown and Easons Bookshop, Monaghan.
