Darren Hughes says he was not surprised to see Monaghan having to hang on in this afternoon's 0-13 to 0-11 win over Down in Clones.

The hosts were hotly fancied to see off Eamonn Burns' side after the latter's heavy defeat to Donegal in last weekend's Division One opener in Newry.

However, Hughes said he and his team mates were taking nothing for granted going in against their Ulster counterparts.

"We knew Down were no bad team and that they just got caught on the hop last week, but they were well organised today and we knew there'd be a backlash," the Scotstown man told BBC Sport NI.

"They proved it there near the end and another couple of minutes we would have been under the cosh again, but thankfully we held on."

He continued: "We know Division One is tight and that we can't take any games for granted. It can turn every weekend, so we have to take every game as it comes and look for the two points."
