Magheracloone 1-14, Inniskeen 0-9.

A hungrier more clinical Magheracloone proved too strong in most departments for Inniskeen in this entertaining if never spectacular senior championship qualifier game in Drumhowan on Sunday. It was a victory at a cost though for the Mitchells as they had talisman Tomas Freeman red carded with eight minutes of normal time remaining which could rule him out of their next outing. His influence is crucial to Magheracloone's prospects and was yesterday as he finished with seven points, five from frees, but was also the creator of many more. Magheracloone were never headed in the entire contest, leading by 0-8 to 0-4 at half-time and by the end of the third quarter they had extended that lead to 7. A goal by Alan Kieran with 12 minutes of normal time remaining was the score that completely killed the game off as Inniskeen lacked the penetration to make any inroads into Magheracloone's advantage. Scorers: Magheracloone: T Freeman 0-7 (5f), A Kieran 1-0, P Tuite 0-2, A McCahey 0-2, J Lambe, C Rudden, P Finnegan, M Metzger and P McMahon 0-1 each. Inniskeen: D Meegan 0-4, R Meegan 0-2 (1f), P Meegan 0-2, M McKenna 0-1. Referee: X Coyle (Tyholland)..

Castleblayney 2-16 Donaghmoyne 2-8.

Castleblayney staged an increasingly effective second-half performance to keep their championship aspirations on track while putting Donaghmoyne out of this year's competition when these sides met in Clontibret on Sunday. Castleblayney led at half-time by 0-9 to 1-5, Colm Connolly with the Donaghmoyne goal. Connolly netted again in the early minutes of the second-half to restore Donaghmoyne to the lead but a goal for Castleblayney by Brendan McElroy changed the course of the game and Castleblayney built on that to pull away as the Donaghmoyne challenge faded. Ciaran Hanratty got Castleblayney's second goal while his brother Brendan added a few points along with Padraig Greene and Martin McElroy to leave Castleblayney comfortable winners. Scorers: Castleblayney: B McElroy 1-7 (0-4f), C Hanratty 1-4 (0-1f), P Greene 0-2, B Hanratty 0-1, M McElroy 0-1, J Beattie 0-1. Donaghmoyne: C Connolly 2-0, R McDonald 0-4 (3f), F Markey 0-2, S Martin and D Garland 0-1 each. Referee C Mulligan (Aghabog)..

Scotstown 1-13, Truagh 0-9.

Scotstown booked their place in the quarter-final of the Monaghan senior football championship when they proved that bit more potent than Truagh in this entertaining if never spectacular game that was played in Emyvale on Sunday evening. Powered by the Hughes brothers, Darren and Kieran, along with the accuracy of Conor McCarthy and Shane Carey, Scotstown just had too much fire power and were always able to respond any time that Truagh threatened. Scotstown were only headed once in the entire contest and that during the opening quarter when Truagh led by a point but it was a lead that was short lived as Scotstown regained control and a goal by Conor McCarthy in the 26th minute helped them to a two points half-time lead, Scotstown 1-5, Truagh 0-6. Two quick fire points by Shane Carey on the resumption pushed Scotstown four points clear and they were always able to maintain at least that margin although at times they had to defend strongly as Chrissie and Daniel McKenna tried to unlock the Scotstown rearguard. Points by Shane Carey and Kieran Hughes put Scotstown six clear entering the final 10 minutes with the best that Truagh could manage was to pull back a single point while Scotstown finished with a flourish for two further points from Kieran Hughes and Conor McCarthy to wrap up victory by seven points. Scorers: Scotstown S Carey 0-7 (3f), C McCarthy 1-2 (0-1f), K Hughes 0-3, F McPhillips and O Heaphey 0-1 each. Truagh: D McKenna 0-3 (2f), C McAnenly 0-3, C McKenna 0-2 (1f), J McCarron 0-1. Referee: A Marron (Corduff).
