Blackhill Emeralds club notes

August 25, 2015

Minors: Emerald Sarsfields 3-11 Doohamlet 0-09. The minor team put in a smashing performance winning the Fea Cup on Tuesday of last week. Having lost to the same side in a recent league match, this bunch of lads had a lot to prove to some who showed up expecting a similar result. They played every minute with terrific intensity and a hunger that provided them with a platform to showcase their skill and talent. This team still have more silverware to play for with no date confirmed yet for the championship final. Veterans from both clubs involved must now keep their fingers crossed that these boys can progress and perform to a similar level with their senior sides in the near future. Thanks to the staff of Watters Topaz who provided the post match meal. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Doohamlet player Pauric Malone who unfortunately suffered a serious leg injury in the game. Team - Nathan Mc Gonnell, Ronan Merrick, Gary Loughran, Shane Buckley, James Daly (Capt), Ciaran Maguire, Colin Dodds, Ryan Maguire, Alan Nugent, Darren Kavanagh, Brandon Cashel, Stephen Irwin, Tommy Geehan. Subs used- Hugh Brennan, Dillion Mc Gonnell & Jason Lynch. This team will be helping out at the Breakfast morning at Oram on Sunday morning at 10.30 if you wish to show your support.

Reserves: The reserve side entered the match last Friday against Carrickmacross looking to collect silverware for the 2nd year in a row following success in Div 3 last year. The opposition started the match strongly and dominated possession for the opening exchanges. The Blackhill defence -led by man of the match Vinny Mc Nally - stood up and proved their worth, denying the Carrick attackers space and clear scoring opportunities. Then, on the 20 minute mark, Blackhill's lively inside line sprung into life and recorded 4 points in a row. Half time 8-4 to Blackhill. The 2nd half again began with Carrick on the front foot but again the Blackhill rearguard stood resolute, coughing up a miserly 2 points in the entire half. Around the middle, Blackhill found a foot hold and began to supply the forwards again which resulted in 2 frees which Andrew Burns converted to maintain our lead. One of these scores was a memorable effort as Andrew kicked against himself similar to Maurice Fiztgerald in '01. The final whistle blew at 10-6 to Blackhill. A great success and one made possible by the effort put in throughout the year and those days when players even came out of retirement to perform in crucial league games. Congratulations to team management Gene Murphy & John Costello.

Eurotech JFL: Éíre Óg 1-11 Blackhill 2-11. Another valuable 2 points secured on a wet afternoon last Sunday. This side travel to Killanny on Sunday with a 12.30 throw in.

Junior Championship: The semi final pairings have been finalised. Blackhill Vs. Scotstown and Rockcorry Vs. Toome. These games are due to be played on the 13th Sept. with venue yet to be confirmed.

Juvenile Training: Continues on Saturday morning at 11pm.

End of an Era: Kevin 'The Machine' McManus is heading off to the Big Apple and New York's gain is most definitely Blackhill's loss. Kevin became a very popular member of the club when he began to work behind the bar in 2007. Straight away he was transformed as the once hairy rocker was put through his paces by the Young at Heart committee who taught him how to waltz. Kevin always had a trick up his sleeve and was never afraid to decorate the truth! Outside of the bar, Kevin became known as the 'Bear in the Square' following a goalscoring spree that almost broke the internet. A going-away party will be held in the club tomorrow, Friday evening, to wish Kevin and his girlfriend Ciara Gormley the very best of luck State-side.

Sympathy: The club extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Fergal Lanney, Annyart, who passed away recently. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

The Moving On Programme: This is a great course that offers a brilliant opportunity to enhance your education. It's a 45 week course that contains a mixture of practical and theory based subjects in Sports and Recreation QQI Level 4. It's based at the Iontas Centre. As well as an opportunity to move up the education ladder, this course also offers opportunities to avail of GAA coaching awards such as the introductory and level one certificates. Expressions of interest must be made before the end of August by completing an application form. Contact Barry Dolan (Coordinator) on 042-9753404
