Corey reflects on "long hard road"

Monaghan veteran Vinny Corey navigated a "long hard road" to get his hands on a second Ulster SFC medal.

Prior to last Sunday, Corey had finished up on the losing side in three provincial deciders - two against Tyrone and last year's defeat to Donegal. So it meant a lot to bag a second Anglo-Celt Cup in three years and dismiss the flash-in-the-pan tag:

"For the older players, it has been a long hard road with a lot of disappointments. For some of us it is our fifth final," the versatile Clontibret clubman told The Irish Independent.

"We didn't want to just win one out of five, we wanted to get another. People could always level it at you if you just won the one that it was a flash in the pan, so it's nice to tag another one on."

Regarding his nullification of Donegal talisman Michael Murphy last weekend, Corey adds: "When you are marking a player like Michael Murphy you have to be prepared for anything. He could come into full forward for the whole half, he could come out. You have to be adaptable. He dictates it, wherever he goes you have to go with him yourself. You can't let him get off the hook if he goes out the field."
