Toome club notes

September 30, 2014

Toome GFC Development Fund GRAND DRAW: Toome GFC are delighted to announce that we are currently selling tickets for our Grand Draw! The money is intended to assist in the Development and running of the club. First Prize is a very attractive €5000, which would be a very welcome windfall for any of us! Tickets cost €20 each, or 3 for €50. We need the help of everybody in the area, and ticket sellers are the key to the draw's success. We urge people to put in a 'big push' as other clubs have reaped the rewards of enthusiastic sales.

Senior Team: We welcome Aughnamullen to Toome on Saturday 4th October at 5pm as the battle continues for a league semi final spot.

Under 16s: Well done to the under 16s on a brilliant win in the league final against Patrick Emmets on Sunday, coming out on top in an exciting match on a final scoreline of 4-16 to 3-13! The game started at a blistering pace, with both sides keen to exert their authority. The bold tactical switch of Frank Connolly into full forward reaped dividends, with 2 quickfire goals on 10 and 12 minutes, a lead that we would never relinquish. Charlie McDonnell had a good game in goals, his long kickouts were a real bonus, before finishing the game at full back. Shane McGeough has had a fine game in defence, sending his man down blind alleys time and again with John Gorman leading the line well beside him. John finished the game in goals, having finished the semi final at midfield. Keane O'Reilly did a great man-marking job on the Patrick Emmets dangerman, restricting him to a solitary score, in what was surely his finest hour in a Toome jersey.

Kevin Tibby and Stephen Blessing formed a rugged half back line, literally putting their head where others wouldn't put their feet! James Wilson was outstanding in midfield, giving an exhibition of high fielding before injury forced him off. He re-emerged for the final minutes, rattling in a vital 1-1 on his return. Matthew Carolan switched out to midfield, working very hard and contributing well in attack. The half forward line worked extremely hard, Kevin McCooey's defending high up the pitch and skill on the ball made life difficult for the Patrick Emmets defence. Bartek Karpinski grew into the game as it went on, and when the pressure was on in the second half, he drove us forward. James McMahon had an excellent start to the game, winning kickouts and kicking 2 good points, before injury ended his day prematurely.

In the inside line, Killian Ruddy was lively and accurate, playing well on the big day as always, while Frank Connolly had an outstanding day at full forward, making great use of the quality ball going into him. Igor Wojtas played well when introducted, while Eoghan Watters fired over 2 great points in the second half. Sam, Joseph, Cian and Colm all contributed well all year, and plyed their part in getting us to the final.

It was a victory that seemed improbable a few short weeks ago, when we had to beat Blayney in Toome to make the semis, having been hammered by them earlier in the year. The quality display that day gave the team confidence going forward and they followed that up with a memorable victory over Clones in the semi final. Great credit must go to the mentors Enda Quinn, Louise & PJ Kelly and Sean O'Reilly as the improvement in the team has been outstanding. Well done to all involved!
