Toome club notes

September 09, 2014

Toome GFC Development Fund GRAND DRAW: Toome GFC are delighted to announce that we are currently selling tickets for our Grand Draw! The money is intended to assist in the Development and running of the club. First Prize is a very attractive €5000, which would be a very welcome windfall for any of us! Tickets cost €20 each, or 3 for €50. We need the help of everybody in the area, and ticket sellers are the key to the draw's success. We urge people to put in a 'big push' as other clubs have reaped the rewards of enthusiastic sales.

Senior Team: We were defeated by Aghabog on a scoreline of 5-16 to 2-11 last Saturday evening. It's the definition of  'a tough place to travel to', and luck among other things went against us on the day. Its onwards and upwards for us, and Sunday's 12;30pm throw in against Drumhowan has a 'high noon' feel about it in the race for fourth spot.

Under 16s: If you thought you'd seen everything in the GAA, then think again, as the Toome under 16s produced the performance of a lifetime down in Clones last Thursday night to win by a point. This game had drama throughout, right down to Bartek's dramatic late entrance, replacing fellow international star Igor Wojtas after 20 minutes. We were under pressure from the start, and a Clones goal inside the first 30 seconds set the tone for the uphill battle that lay ahead. We kept chipping away howerer, and at half time we went in 2-6 to 0-5 behind.

We all hoped for an early score in the second half, and it duly arrived, but not in the manner we had hoped, as Clones once again rattled the net. The game looked to be heading towards an inevitable conclusion, as the unbeaten favourites  were well ahead, and any time we built a period of momentum, they seemed to be able to respond with a goal to dash our hopes. We refused to give up, and Frank Connolly went to full back, ensuring that the back gate was closed for good, ably assisted by young Shane McGeough. Kevin Tibby was outstanding at half back, Kevin McCooey launched attack after attack, while Stephen Blessing carried the fight to the opposition, quite literally! In the last 10 minutes, we got on top at midfield, John Gorman's hands and the mercurial James Wilson's jinking feet were decisive. Up front, the twin towers of Matthew Carolan and James McMahon provided power, ably assisted by the hard work and creativity of Bartek Karpinski, Killian Ruddy and Eoghan Watters. As one young Toome supporter commented, he'll regret forever that he didn't go to the game! Well we all have a final against the winners of Castleblayney and Patrick Emmets to look forward to now! Full Time: Toome 3-14 Clones 5-7.

Under 14s:  Well done to our under 14s, finishing a brilliant season on a high by winning our league final against St Tiarnachs Sarsfields (Clones and Killeevan) by 12 points!  This was an outstanding display by a young team who have worked extremely hard, and together with their championship victory, they've been well rewarded!

Cian McEneaney was assured as ever in goals, while Shane McGeough marked their dangerman extremely well, impressing the large Toome support. Sean Callan sought to turn defence into attack at every opportunity, while Igor Wojtas's tight marking and Peter McGinn's interceptions were vital. In midfield, Kevin Tibby charged his way through time and again, and Eoghan Watters capped a fine performance with a well taken goal. James McMahon led the line well  rattling the net from 30 yards, with Andrew Connolly and Eoghan Gorman working hard and providing a threat throughout. Matthew Carolan was an injury doubt beforehand, but his 3 well taken goals were decisive on the day. Liam Murphy, Cian Watters and Joseph McMahon provided pace and enthusiasm on their introduction, while it was brilliant to see Cormac McDonnell, Pauric Donaghy, Shane McCooey and Thomas McMahon provide backup if needed. All of our subs are under 12, so that augurs well for the future! Final Score: Toome 5-13, St Tiarnachs 3-7.
