McGuigan Builders Intermediate Championship
It's always nice to travel back after a win and when our senior team defeated Sean McDermott's last Sunday evening, 24th August, in the McGuigan Builders intermediate football championship (back-door qualifier) the journey back home was a lot more enjoyable and the mood in the car was certainly lifted. After two bruising encounters against Clones it was a demanding week for the team and all the players because the match was another tough, hard-hitting battle but the lads gave a tremendous team performance where each and every player played their part including those introduced. It was an outstanding display full of spirit, heart & courage and the foundation of a dominant defence was vital as it provided our launching pad for a fully deserved victory on a final score-line Rockcorry 1-18 Sean McDermott's 2-9. Our reward for progressing to the next round is a mouth-watering tie against Tyholland which is scheduled for the weekend of 6th / 7th September. Well done lads on a fabulous win and keep up the good work. Please log onto www.rockcorrygaa.ie or visit our Facebook page to view a selection of action photographs.
Monaghan Electrical Intermediate League
The senior team continue with their demanding fixture schedule because it's another busy week ahead in the Monaghan Electrical Intermediate Football League. On Wednesday night (27th August) they travel to play Carrickmacross and throw-in time is 7pm and on Sunday 31st August they are on the road again when they travel to play Tyholland at 1pm.
Golf Classic 2014
We held our annual golf classic last Saturday 23rd August at the scenic surroundings of Clones Golf Course and thankfully, apart from the occasional light shower of rain, the lovely sunny weather conditions made the day very enjoyable and all golfers regardless of their golfing ability had a fun filled day and that's what's it's all about…participation! The event was a huge success and we had a great turnout with over a hundred golfers including some former & current players and many other golfing enthusiasts who were willing to take the time out of their busy schedule to help support the club by participating in the golf classic and I would like to sincerely thank them for joining us in our efforts to raise funds for the club and for making the event such a wonderful occasion.
Golf Classic Presentations
The presentation of prizes took place in Fitzpatrick's and the overall winning team with a score of 102 points was Thomas McCormick, Paddy Kerr, Mac Sammon and Mickey Fitzpatrick. Other prizes were hotly contested on the day and the following team won 2nd prize (99 points) Gabriel Brady, Seamus Brady, Michael Galligan & Ray Litcho and 3rd prize went to Paddy McKeown, Gerry Traynor, Barry Duffy & Butch McAviney. Nearest the pin went to Willie Litcho while Alex Hamilton collected the prize for the longest drive on the fairway while Frank Cleary claimed the title for the longest drive for driving from Dublin! We also had plenty of teams made up from non-regular golfers with the winning team going to Martin Carroll, Keelan Clerkin, Cathal Sheridan and Andrew Carroll with Colin Quinn, Mark Thornton, Dean Fay and Aaron Clerkin coming in second place and congratulations to all the winners. Regarding the golfers who lost the most golf balls I believe this was a very close contest between last year's winner Colin Quinn and new entrant Dean Fay who was seen begging off other golfers for more balls! In addition, two of the non-regular golfers, namely Kieran Fitzpatrick & Eugene Cleary, spent a considerable amount of time playing from the bunkers but they appeared to have a lot of fun trying to get out and I understand that the maintenance crew at Clones Golf Course has placed a bulk order for a couple lorry loads of sand! I have to say, that the feedback from the teams and golfers was very positive and everyone enjoyed the day immensely and once again on behalf of the club I would like to take this opportunity to thank our main sponsors Aidan & Marie Murray of Mullinahinch House Private Nursing Home, Eugene Cleary for sponsoring first prize and all the companies and individuals who sponsored greens and tee boxes and all the teams who participated on the day and for making the event such a wonderful occasion. Without your support and goodwill the efforts of the club could not continue and we deeply appreciate your support and loyalty. Finally, many thanks to the Clones Golf Club for the use of their fine facilities and assistance on the day and a massive well done to Paddy McKeown and our golf committee for their dedication in planning this event. They were the driving force behind this golf classic and we look forward to seeing you all swing again in next year's event.
Gerry's Prepared Veg - Under 12 League
Hard luck to our under 12 footballers who were defeated by Corduff last Thursday 21st August in the semi-final of the Shield. This was an amazing match played at a very high tempo and a great advertisement for our games and all players, from both sides, deserve great credit for their performance because they displayed some remarkable skills and showed tremendous heart. While we had chances to extend our advantage during normal time a determined Corduff outfit fought back and scored a late goal to move ahead by a single point. Trailing by a point and with very little time remaining the boys and girls showed their metal as they battled back magnificently and equalised with virtually the last kick of the game to force extra time with the scoreboard showing Corduff 2-5 Rockcorry 1-8. Corduff showed their strength and class throughout the additional time and with some impressive attacking football finished with a flurry of scores to eventually win this highly exciting and enjoyable match on a score-line 5-9 to 1-10. It was a very entertaining and thrilling encounter and the boys and girls cannot be faulted for their efforts and work-rate because it was top notch. It's just a real shame and in many respects a shambles and a disgrace that the powers that be fixed this match on the same evening as our under 16 semi-final against Cremartin and left many of our parents and supporters angry and dissatisfied! We are part of a great organisation but sometimes we really do shot ourselves in the foot with this type of behaviour which can be avoided with a little common-sense!
Gerry's Prepared Veg - Under 14 League
Our under 14 footballers played Aghabog last Saturday 23rd August  in the semi-final of the Gerry's Prepared Veg league competition. Over the years these two sides have had some great battles and normally they produce some really interesting and thrilling matches. However, that did not happen last Saturday because, from the throw-in, Aghabog took complete control of the game and were far more clinical in front of the posts as they secured a comprehensive victory on a score-line Aghabog 9-23 Rockcorry 5-6. In fairness, Aghabog were the more impressive side on the day and fully deserved their victory. The momentum was very much with them and despite a few occasions when we managed to put together some decent passages of football they were always able to respond to any threat or any surge to keep us at arms-length as they cruised to a comfortable win and on behalf of the club I want to extend our best wishes to Aghabog as they go on to play in the final. Hard luck lads, I know it's heart-breaking for you but keep those heads held high because you produced  a lot of good performances through-out the campaign and worked extremely hard for each other and hopefully your day will come soon! Many thanks to the management team Conor Brannigan and Marion Larmer and anyone else involved for their superb efforts all year. Gerry's Prepared Veg - Under 16 League
Our under 16 footballers played Crematin last Thursday 21st August in the semi-final of the Gerry's Prepared Veg league competition and while the game proved to be quite a tense affair during the opening exchanges Cremartin ran our comfortable winners on a score-line 7-18 to 2-4. Hard luck lads and well done for getting so far. Keep your heads up and get ready for the next challenge which is against Latton in the semi-final of the championship. The game takes place on Thursday 28th August at 7pm and will certainly be a cracking game.
Under 10 Go Games Blitz
The next blitz will be a double blitz (Under 8 & 10's) and will take place on Saturday 6th September at Latton.
