Monaghan boss Seamus McEnaney has described retiring stars Vinny Corey and Dessie Mone as “legends of Monaghan football”.

Both men announced their inter-county retirements yesterday after more than 30 years’ combined service to the Farney County, with each winning Ulster SFC titles in 2015 and 2013.

Speaking to RTE Sport, McEnaney branded Corey one of the most versatile players he has ever had at his disposal.

"Vinny played full-back in the 2007 Ulster final against Tyrone. At half-time, I switched him to full-forward. He almost won the game singled-handedly.

"We were beaten by two points, but he brought Monaghan to the brink of a first Ulster title in 20 years. He turned the game on its head. He’s that versatile you could play him anywhere."

On Mone, he described the Clontibret man as a defender which “nobody liked to see him coming.”

"Dessie was my go-to man in defence,” McEnaney stated. “He picked up all the dangermen around the country. Paddy Bradley, Steven McDonald, Benny Coulter, Colm Cooper and others. The best compliment I could give him is, no forward liked to see him coming.

"He was a brilliant man-marker."
