Aughnamullen club notes

September 04, 2019

The Late Joseph Duffy: On Sunday night last one of our clubs finest administrators Joseph Duffy passed away. Joseph or " Master Joe" as he was affectionately known as was on our club committee for a number of years. In his earlier days he played for the club at minor level and was part of the successful Maguire Cup Winning side of 1956. Following his playing career ended he was appointed principal in Loughmourne N.S. in 1975 and he and new teacher Lornie Duffy were instrumental in introducing Gaelic Football in the School and this was evident with the number of successful Northern Standard Cup Success in the early 1980's with the number of players at this time representing the club up and to including Senior level where they achieved success. During this time he joined our club committee serving as Club Representative at County Committee level and also served as Vice Chairman and Cultural Officer at Club level as well. Joseph was always involved in the club fundraising initiatives and was always available to do the Gate at our club grounds when asked to do.

In 1986 the club initiated the hall of fame awards at the Annual Dinner Dance  and Joseph was given the onerous task of talking about the Hall of Fame Recipient and it was so refreshing to hear these stories and it was credit to Joseph for all the background information he gathered about the Hall of Fame Recipient and in 2010 he was inducted into the Clubs Hall of Fame an Award he richly deserved.

Always through this time he kept an active interest in how the club were performing at all games from Senior to Juvenile, indeed he could be seen at juvenile games from Under 12 up and he would be keen to ask how any of the teams were doing and this was specially evident when his son Allen donned the blue jersey and he would be seen at many county games too alongside his wife Philomena and good friend and neighbour Owen Duffy.

He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him it can be said it is definitely an end of an era and sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Philomena, Son Allen, Daughter Martha, Daughter in Law Marianne, Son in Law Tadhg, grandchildren, His Sisters Brid & Angela, extended family & Friends. Go ndeana Dia trocaire ar a anam dhilis. Ni bheidh a leithead ann aris.
