Minors bid for back-to-back Ulster league titles

April 11, 2019

Monaghan v Tyrone: Saturday, April 13th in Maghera, Co. Derry @12.00pm.

This Saturday Monaghan will attempt to put Ulster minor football league (U17) titles back-to-back when the take on Tyrone in the Jim McGuigan Cup final.

Monaghan clinched their place in the final with a comprehensive victory over Antrim last Saturday in Dunsilly when they won with ten points to spare, that win coming after a good victory over Down by
4-15 to 3-9 in their previous outing.

This game on Saturday is a rerun of the semi-final of the same competition last year when Monaghan defeated Tyrone, before going on to defeat Donegal in the final, and they then added the Ulster minor football championship double for good measure, and with a good smattering of players from last year’s team, particularly Jason Irwin and Aaron Mulligan, Monaghan certainly would be regarded as strong contenders.

However, Tyrone under the guidance of Collie Holmes have been working hard and are in the final on merit and will see Saturday’s game as a chance to gain some measure of revenge for last year’s reverse. This good competitive outing though is coming at a good time for both sides as they
are just two weeks out from their respective opening games in this year’s Electric Ireland Ulster minor football championship with Monaghan taking on Cavan in Clones on Saturday April 28th.

The Jim McGuigan Cup final on Saturday is followed by the under sixteen Buncrana Cup Shield final in which Monaghan also meet Tyrone, with that game timed for 2 PM in Maghera, Monaghan clinching their place in the Shield final with a comprehensive victory over Antrim by 4-16 to 1-3 last Saturday.

Both games on Saturday will see extra time played and finish on the day if necessary.
