Double Champions 2018:  Doohamlet  1-10    Donaghmoyne  0-08

What an achievement. This group of players have delivered again. Four Intermediate Championship titles, 2 Intermediate League titles including two Doubles since 2010. This team will be revered in years to come when Doohamlet folk talk about great teams and players who wore the blue with distinction. On Saturday evening last under the bright lights in Grattan Park Inniskeen, Doohamlet were magnificent from the first whistle. After the disappointment of our defeat in Ulster the previous week credit must go to Manager Dessie McBennett and his backroom team who had the players in full focus mode and did they deliver a performance. Our defence was immense only conceding 2 points from play and turned over Donaghmoyne possession time after time. Jamie Walshe ran himself into the ground at midfield scoring two points from play with Barry McGinn also outstanding and looking back to his best. Our forwards broke at speed and with the vast open spaces of Inniskeen Oisin O’Neill, justifying his starting place having a fine game Paul McArdle, Hugh McGinn and Barry McBennett were scoring at will. Doohamlet were dominating this game throughout and led by five points entering the final quarter when Darren Connolly finished a flowing move which began in our fullback line with a sweet left foot finish to the net. Doohamlet emptied the bench in the closing stages and when the final whistle blew Doohamlet had added a league title to our championship success only a couple of weeks ago and were deserving Double Winners. Commiserations to Donaghmoyne. They were worthy opponents and to miss out on promotion must be hard to take. But no doubt their day will come.

Captain James Casey climbed the steps and after a very emotional speech raised the Paddy O’Rourke Cup aloft much to the delight of the Blue Army. Celebrations began in Connollys with a post match dinner and Doohamlet G.F.C. wish to thank Alexis and Marion for providing such a delicious meal. We now look forward to 2019 as we now play the elite at Senior level.
