U17 Div 1 HL: Impressive Trim advance to final

Trim's Gary Fleming

Trim 5-22 Boardsmill/Rathmoylon 3-1

Trim U17 hurlers won the right to play in the U17 hurling league final for 2018 with a very impressive victory over a Boardsmill/Rathmoylan selection last evening in St Lomans Park Trim.

The Trim Club once again had the pitch in excellent condition and given the horrendous weather we have experienced in the last six weeks great credit must again be extended to Luke Gaynor and the ground staff for the brilliant work they are doing.

The U17 age group is of vital importance to all clubs this year and going forward as it replaces the old U18 minor competitions and is now the Premier competition to win nationally and within each county.

From the Start of this match the Trim youngsters were in control and scored at will into the Town End in the first half. The winners had great leaders down the middle, Gary Fleming, Conor Quigley, Ben Holden, Ian Birmingham, Sean O'Mahony and James Murray were driving force behind the team, with strength, skill and fitness that the Boardsmill/Rathmoylan team could not match or counteract in either half of this one-sided encounter.  Between them Murray, Birmingham and Holden contributed a total of 4-15 from play during the hour.

Callum Buckley in goals is an old head on young shoulders and last night his handling and puck outs were excellent. Conall Rodgers and Brian Bolger are two very strong and skillful corner backs who repeatedly cleared their lines with little fuss in last night's match. Dylan Farrell and Harry Harlin in the half back line turn defense into attack with ease and are real natural ball winners who contribute to the score line regularly as they did in this semi final clash .

Trim scored 5-22 last night with 1-1 from the stick of Oisin Hacket at number fifteen who threatened the Boardsmill/Rathmoylan defense every time he had the ball in hand. Sean O'Mahony stuck an excellent point on the run from thirty eight meters and his work rate for his team was outstanding. Mikie Cole as usual notched some great scores and finished a very good night for himself with 1-4.

Youngster Joey Cole played well and laid on three fine scoring opportunities for his team mates and was unlucky not to register a major in the first half. A real feature of last night's performance was the tireless running and work rate of Angus Shortt at number twelve he created lots of space for his team mates and got on a lot of ball in a very food performance.

The Trim management used the bench in the second half and brought on Adam Boyle, Andrew Gibney, Evan Ganley, Evan De Coursey, Eoin Lenihan, Conor McKeown and Connor McGinley all of these lads had real impact when introduced and all will be knocking hard on the door for a starting place come final day.
