Kildalkey 2-15 Dunboyne 3-10
A goal deep in injury time from Derek 'Ducksy' Doran sealed the win for Kildalkey in this All County HL Division 1 clash. The star attacker missed the majority of last season through injury.
Kildalkey senior hurlers started off their year with a league game versus Dunboyne after a couple of cancelled games over the last few weeks due to bad weather and unplayable pitch's.
The winners looked rusty as Dunboyne made the better start and got in for 2 goals early on and led at half time by 2-3 to 0-7.
Kildalkey's points came from Paul Fagan (3), Conor Kearney, Derek Doran, Paddy Coneely, Nicky Potterton. Potterton and corner back Martin Browne were making their senior debuts.
After the break it was nip and tuck with Kearney hitting 3 more frees along with an Evan Fitzgerald point. Paddy Conneely scored a goal to put the village ahead but Dunboyne hit back with Sean Quigley doing the most damage from play and frees. Kearney hit 3 more frees and Nicky Potterton hit a great point after a clever Brian Coneely pass to leave the blues ahead 1-14 to 2-9 heading into the last few minutes but there was to be drama at the end as Dunboyne got in for a goal to leave them leading by a point with time almost up.
Conor Kearney showed nerves of steel to level up the game with a long range pressure free and then Dunboyne worked the ball up the field to Quigley again and he split the posts with what looked like the winner but Kildalkey had time for one last attack and somehow got the ball into the danger area and up stepped Derek Doran who got the ball up into his hand and rounded his man and had the net shaking to leave the men in blue ahead at the long whistle on the score line of Kildalkey 2-15 Dunboyne 3-10.
