Never heard Tommy Dowd, Graham,Trevor or any previous captain ever critical of teamates

They were a different level though

I think they're unusual and disappointing comments to be honest, they highlight the downbeat mood and and lack of unity in Meath football at the minute. Where's the loyalty and encouragement towards his former team mates, I mean with an attitude like that it's scary to think he was Meath captain.

Ps, the man is fully entitled to his opinion of course, and a lot of us here on HS criticize the players and management by times, sometimes harshly sometimes with merit, but it's a lot worse coming from a former captain, especially one who played with most of the current squad.

Agree with previous posts.

Kevin held a very privileged and responsible position with a traditional and proud county, and sometimes that responsibility, while lessened, is still there. He's not just any Joe soap, he's a former Meath captain and someone in a group which people all over the county look too.
He's also somebody who knows better than anyone posting here, myself included, of the incredible sacrifice and unselfishness given by these former team mates, and the exact position that they are in this week. I doubt it's something he would have appreciated from say Darren Fay about 12 or 24 months ago.
But then again Darren and Kevin were cut from different cloth I'm afraid.

God, there is optimism!
I am actually shocked by Kevin Reilly. I would have expected more from him.
Loyality completely gone. Even if he thought (that opinion of Saturday) that was true; why air them in public? I can only imagine what a young player(s), such as Eamonn Wallace or whoever, preparing for Saturday must think. "My old captain, doesn't even believe in us. Sure no wonder he retired. What's the point!"
Amazing comments. And this once again proves why GAA players should shut up, and simply concentrate on playing football.

On the otherhand would you not motivate you to prove he is wrong?

Absolutely.
Very disappointed with him. After his full on ranting last year in support of mod.
People have said that without certain players in team (including Kevin) we lacked leadership. I think that may be exposed as been wrong reading this, I wish him well and thank him for his services to Meath football, but to be honest with a attitude like that he certainly won't be missed in the leadership of the team, furthermore very unbecoming of a former captain,

How can you criticise the man when he gives an honest opinion. There'd be many in Meath that agree with him. A trip to Derry is tough prospect.. We can win but it is not going to be a cake walk by any means.. He owes the Meath team nothing..Nor any talking head on here.

Yes I take the point that you could use it as motivation to perform and prove the opposite. But my point is, if you were reading or hearing those comments, would it not be like a kick in the balls, especially coming from your former captain and so-called leader!
Very disappointing from Kevin.

Nobody said the trip noeprth would be easy, but in my opinion winnable.
Kevin Reilly owes the county nothing, correct and has serves us all well. Nobody disagrees.
He is entitled to his opinion, but common sense and respect for the players (and his former teammates) should provail, before voicing such negativity in public.

I think Meath will beat Derry! Simple as that! I am sure it will be tough but I think they are better than the second half against Dublin!

'Former Meath Captain Expresses Honest Opinion" Shock Horror...!
You may not agree with his opinion but he's entitled to voice it without being criticised because it's not what we want to hear.
Would you prefer he lied and told us he thinks that Meath football is the powerhouse it was twenty years ago and we're going to hammer Derry tomorrow?
