Hurling Referees

(Oldest Posts First)

With 3 rounds of the hurling championship played how are we finding our referees, this is not slagging referees who do we feel are adding to the game and how and likewise who are the very strict referees.
Remember this is not to slag anyone but just to see who we prefer in our games.

I'd say Nick fitz, Conor Ferguson and Fergus smith are only referees in the county that could referee a top tier intercounty match. All seem to have a good level of common sense when it comes to tackling. Try their best to let the game go without losing control. Other referees blow straight away once any sort of contact comes in.

Nick Fitzgerald, Stephen Masterson and Fergus Smith are the only referees who are of a quality standard.

The rest are well below par and do not let the game flow. Everyone knows this, it's common knowledge.

The advantage rule is lost amongst these referees.
Every player wants the free and will gladly take the free if it is in a scorable position.
The only time it is acceptable to allow advantage is when there is a goal scoring opportunity on or if the ball is definitely going to be cleared from defence.
But to not give a free 45 metres out, (guaranteed score from a free) when a score doesn't come result, is absolutely inexcusable.

Marcus Quinn and Donal Smith are fairly decent refs too I find.

I have noticed in recent times that hurling referee from other counties are doing senior matches in Meath This cannot be great for promoting hurling refs in Meath or for moral of young refs starting out. I can't imagine this happening in Meath football or if perhaps David Coldrick started to ref in Dublin Kildare ect there would be a revolt from refs in those counties.

Everyone saying Fergus Smith the best referee in the county. Didn't cover himself in glory Saturday night. The consistency of his decisions were poor. One time a free is awarded for a bad challenge and then it is not awarded the next time. He didn't give 3 blatant fouls when the game was in the melting pot. Another thing, was he not involved with BHG in the past and how come he gets to referee a game which has a big impact on them qualifying for the knockouts.. Its like Donal Smith refing a BHG game against Dunderry and knowing if Dunderry win, O'Mahonys will have a chance of going through. These things shouldn't happen..

Every referee is a member of a club so it's impossible to have conspiring thoughts on fixtures. If that was the case there would be very few matches going ahead due to conflict of interest
