Player of the year

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

No disrespect to the man but isn't it another clear indicator of the standard in the county when a man of 35 who is years past his heyday and he earns player of the year, I am not saying that he doesn't deserve it but for him to be winning it at his stage in career says it all about where Meath football is at

The judges obviously didn't see peadar bryne play any games this year. Head and shoulders above anyone playing football all year and I seen all grades most championship weekends

I couldn't believe the senior football decision. No arguments with the hurling award. Paedar Byrne overall was the best. Andrew tormey , paddy o rourke and Donal keoghan were the county standouts.

have to agree with the above 2 comments about Peadar Byrne just outstanding and played some of the games without exerting himself!! Always stood up to the mark for Ballinlough all year and is not finished his year yet. He would destroy McKeigue!!

You cant give byrne player of the year he a former county player playing intermeadie football you would expect him to stand out in that! niall mckeigue marked joe sheridan, cian ward, paddy o rourke and andrew tormey in 2nd half all out of the game ! he was by the stand out back in this years championship no doubt about that

Niall McKeigue has been the most consistent defender in Meath football for years. Great to see him get the award!

Maybe ye should try write something positive for a change. Alot of threads ruined by people throwing out stupid negative opinions about things with little or no factual basis.

It's just another dig at O'Mahony's from cowardlyasafox/analyst. Well done Niall McKeigue.

Not sure how good your reading skills are but i actually stated that i was not saying he didn't deserve it, maybe some of ye should actually read what is posted before coming back with childish replies, Our Donal Curtis would have been as deserving as any in 2010/2012

Oh and by the way you will find that in fact Donal Keogan is the most consistant defender in Meath by quite a distance

That's good that you agree with some of what I am saying. In club football the past five years, Niall McKeigue has been the most consistent defender in my opinion. He has marked alot of the top full-forwards for many years and has come out of each battle with the full-forward having made little headway and Niall having had a great game. If you really want an example of this, I would ask any of the posters in disagreement with me to tell me when over the last few years has Cian Ward came out on top when marking Niall McKeigue. This is not a slight on Cian Ward as Niall has marked many talented, dangerous forwards like this. He has played at this consistently high level for many years and it is great to see him recognised for this in my opinion.

I'd like to see a senior player, intermediate, junior and County team player of the year.

I think that it is good to see a player of 35 years earn the player of the year and especially one who deserves it like McKeigue does. Flyer - I have not seen many county players perform particularly well in the championships and that includes the senior county final. Keoghan is good but being played out of position in a poor county defence.

royalrealist- You will find out the answer to your question next year when he competes in the senior!. I do however think that he is a good footballer and maybe still be on the county panel. I do agree with ziggy and seasideblues and add that similar should be carried out for the football team of the week throughout the championship.

Hogan Stand do a great job with team of the week. The Munterconnaught club in Cavan came up with a novel fundraising idea called the Breffni All Stars. For every round of championship games a player/team is picked. Then an All Stars team is picked along with a player of the year for each grade at a presentation night at the end of the season.

Toney - The HS do an excellent job and it is always interesting to read the different opinions and the banter that is generated by those opinions.

Niall McKEIGUE and Peader are both brilliant players but totally different and cannot not compare.
Mckeigue is a man marker and mentally loves marking the top players. Byrne is an all action up and down the field type of player that every team would dream of having.

For me Byrne is the best player in Meath presently but have no issue with either getting the award.
My problem is the brain dead management team who feel he's not co standard ahead of the dross in the squad/team.
I take it now they will have to admit this mistake and ask him back in or maybe he's not in the crazy 5 year plan!!

5 years ago I called for him to be picked midfield for Meath, pity we will never see him play this position in croke park.

Re Mckeigue's age, Joe Cassells lifted Sam when he was 34 or 35. Different times I know but when you look after yourself 35 is not old. Great man, pity we dont have more like him.
