Team for championship v Carlow

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now that the league is out of the way what team should MOD play in the first round of the championship assuming all injured players are recovered (except E Wallace of course).

Maybe it is a bit premature to pick a team. I think the management should view some club championship matches and they may be able to pick up a couple of extra players for the panel.

Why would they pick a player from club games? They haven't done it to date (bar maybe Dalton mc donagh?).
There is a focus more so on bringing up u21s....which isn't a bad thing.

The panel will probably remain the same bar possibly a couple more u21s - McGill & B. O'Brien?

dubsout- If you are serious about winning you obviously pick your best players and I would think that is fairly obvious!. Just because a guy has been on a development squad or indeed on an u-21 team does not and should not make him an obvious choice for a senior panel. You obviously think that a players performance at club level is irrelevant.

The focus should be on getting your best players on to your senior panel irrespective of the route the have travelled and just to add it makes little sense trying to position forwards as defenders as in most case it does not work (and will be shown the case when we meet the better quality teams.

browncows. But in general the lads who are on underage county teams are the main men for clubs.

If I was manager I wouldn't bring in someone who was doing well for there club if they were in there late twenties. That's just a personal opinion. But I would put it this way - based on last years champo - we would surely have cian ward, Jamie queeney, peader byrne and geaney from dunboyne in the panel. Do we really want them there? Im far more excited by the likes of newman, o'sullivan, mcmahon and tormey.
These lads have all been part of relatively successful underage teams (in comparison to lads who have gone before them)

look, im a player in my mid 20s and I still dream of running out in croke park like most others, but there HAS to be a cut off?
am I way off the mark? I might be...

dubsout- Most players are just coming to their best in their mid to late 20's -your still not to late (I mean too old). The best of luck to you and I hope you achieve your goal.

Championship is 2 months away lads. Have we 2 months of lads picking almost identical teams to look forward to? I personally only care about who MOD and co pick...

Don't understand why people are picking burke for corner back. Meath played 3 their last 3 games without him and did very well.
The back line seem to have tightened up which would only indicates that they were not left exposed which happens regularly when burke
keeps going forward. Have people forgotten the roasting the dublin corner forward gave him last year in the leinster final.

Well said I for one dread seeing him at 4 he gets brutally exposed when he is ran at..maybe a place for Mickey sweeping around the half back line but it'd be suicide playing him at 4

I would be concerned with that defence -weak half backline and I do not think that you can make defenders of players who have played all their football as forwards. Ideally you require pace in your half backline along with the ability to know when to man mark when required as well as having good distribution skills with the ball. However, any of the teams listed should overcome Carlow and that is with no dis-respect to Carlow who generally put up a good battle come championship time.

Burke should be in the half-back line or on the bench...

If all fit I'd like to see
O'Rourke

Young
Tobin
Menton
Burke
Meade
Gillespie
Tormey
O'Rourke
Reilly
McMahon

McMahon playing the role that wallace would have played, not sure that bray has 70 mins of championship football in him at this stage but that's what bench is there for, I feel I may have been hard on Harrington and Carroll in particular, but sure its only a opinion and everyone differs. But the fact remains that unless Meath get a very long run we won't see my selection, any updates on Meade Gillespie Dalton???

If all bar Wallace are back then I'd probably go for:

1. P. O'Rourke
2. Keoghan
3. K. Reilly
4. Menton (Burke is ok but I'm still not convinced by Young yet)
5. Tobin
6. Harnan
7. Carroll

8. S. O'Rourke (Meade was very good last year but unfortunately I think injury will hamper him this year)
9. Gillespe

10. O'Sullivan
11. Tormey
11. G. Reilly
13. McMahon
14. S. Bray
15. Newman

I't nice to see that we have a stronger squad than last year anyway, there's a few players who are going to feel hard done by this summer no matter who is picked. Centre field is particularly pleasing because this is an area where we've struggled badly since way back in 2001 when McDermott retired but now we have Gillespe, O'Rourke, Tormey, Meade and Menton who can all play there and all of them are good options.
