I think this is worth a thread of its own at this stage and not get consumed in an individual game thread. oldsam_newsam (Meath) - Posts: 638 - 01/07/2017 22:15:52 2008616 Link 0 |
IMHO, Bryan McMahon is probably the best finisher in the current squad but he is out now for the season. Biggy can finish too when he gets a clear enough run at the goals. Mickey Newman is the most experienced, classy and composed (if a little nonchalant at times) in and around goal and so the most likely player to improve things in this area. We need a goal poacher up front but also someone at #11 who is the go to man in attack (a mobile playmaker). A player with the experience, confidence and ability to be in the right place at the right time, always looking for (demanding) the ball, and instead of trying to do everything by himself, he bring others into the play all around him to maximum effect. in the league cillian was our top goal scorer, think he got 6 goals. ziggy32001 (Meath) - Posts: 8354 - 02/07/2017 09:11:55 2008763 Link 3 |
All the more reason to try him closer to goals and not have the responsibility of leading the attack.Watching the 3 championship games so far it's just not working out for him there. Not the only reason for our lack of goals I am sure.

You mean we need to get a few players from the dublin panel who can't get a game for dublin ?

Ha Ha. No need to be so negative. Those two guys they recruited haven't featured, one in an OBC game. Something of a publicity stunt. GlasagusOr (Meath) - Posts: 1348 - 02/07/2017 16:03:38 2008999 Link 0 |
thing is we put up big scores against derry, fermanagh, clare in the league and our support play and running was brilliant without looking wide open at the back. not sure how we lost that balance.

Glas mightn't always agree with you, but its funny the amount of "new" Meath posters that's popping up, with nothing only snide comments about team, players, management and everything they can think of. Very odd for so called Meath supporters, as I said we might disagree but we both know the other one wants what's best for Meath football, always.

Do we peak too early in the year and then others catch up by the time the championship comes around? Do we take the league more seriously than others? If we had to go down to Ennis could you honestly expect a result anything like the league match on current form? GlasagusOr (Meath) - Posts: 1348 - 02/07/2017 16:23:34 2009015 Link 1 |
Bad and good in league too, the Down cork games in particular. I think its the old chestnut of consistency. Actually that's why I want a game we not expected to win, only team Meath would be favourite in is v Clare (whether that's accurate or not is another thing) but that is how it would-be perceived. I'll be honest I want mayo in Navan royaldunne (Meath) - Posts: 19449 - 02/07/2017 16:35:55 2009032 Link 1 |
The way Meath set up they will not score goals.. Royalio11 (Meath) - Posts: 757 - 02/07/2017 16:50:12 2009040 Link 2 |
I remember when Meath played and should have beaten a Donegal team (that got promoted) a few years ago on the back of a bad result, when few would have given them even a sporting chance. They would probably be more up for a game with Mayo or Donegal, but I feel they need a home draw badly and that is pushing your luck somewhat. The three of us have had one home match, so somebody will be lucky and get another. Clare are deserving of a home tie this round. If we got Clare in Navan, it would be the most winnable matchup of the three, providing Meath improve and are not if any way complacent. Clare away would be a much tougher challenge, despite the league result. GlasagusOr (Meath) - Posts: 1348 - 02/07/2017 16:58:47 2009051 Link 1 |
I actually think donegal at hone is the most winnable. They have a real chancer managing them and he's starting to get exposed.

I tend to agree with that assessment

We're both coming from a similar place. A bad hammering and an ugly win, so who knows. Michael Murphy beat us on his own the last time he was in Navan. We owe them one! Good few Donegal, Mayo and even Clare folk in the county too. We have some history with Mayo in the championship and as recent as '09 in the qualifiers, so that is what I'm half expecting.
