One point I was making was Burke is a very good hurler, this is shown by the fact that out of players who played for Meath he was picked out to represent an Irish selection a number of times. It seems bitter to me to see people begrudgingly knocking his hurling ability. Another point I was making was that in a county where football is the dominant sport it does not make sense for posters on here to say to as a hard rule 'if he won't pick hurling over football forget about him'. If a county hurling manager can make a suitable arrangement to get a good hurler made available to him (from the football panel) than let him make this arrangement if it benefits the team. As I said in the earlier post I do not know the details in this situation so this is in no way having a go at hurling management. bdbuddah (Meath) - Posts: 1298 - 11/04/2017 16:12:19 1978479 Link 0 |
But he's not available for the whole Leinster Championship, he'll be busy training with the footballers.

Actually thought it was very silly of him to say that basically the Clare match was more important as it was a fight for promotion........Was the hurling league final not a fight for promotion too???? That statement in itself proves where his priorities lie and it sounds like he made that decision himself. Anyway back to the discussion of the current panel and my 6 forwards would be Clynch Gannon Sullivan James Kelly Gavin McGowan Kevin Keena billyjack24 (Meath) - Posts: 40 - 11/04/2017 22:18:51 1978600 Link 0 |
No it wasn't a fight for promotion because they were already promoted so the clare game was definitely more important.

I think we should park the Toher and Burke saga to another thread as it's only a distraction and an irrelevance on this thread about the 2017 Meath Hurling squad. Both of these players have made their "choice", they chose football instead of Hurling, we should be happy for them, they're lucky enough to be able to choose and they can have no complaints with the way things have panned out after they made that choice. No management team in any sport should have to 'come to an arrangement' with anybody to facilitate any player. We put these people in these positions because we trust them to deliver results, if they feel they can't deliver these results by having to cater for bit part players then we have to trust them in their decision for dealing with this issue. If they feel they need 100% commitment from a player in matches AND training then so be it, we can't let sentiment come into it because of who the players are. What would Alex Ferguson do? What would Brian Cody do? What would Andy Mc do...? Why should Martin Ennis be expected to do anything different..? Wedgie (Meath) - Posts: 253 - 12/04/2017 06:18:57 1978642 Link 0 |
Don't know where you got that from......it was down to the final against Wicklow who was promoted so every bit as important if not more so!

Blackspot09 the hurlers were not already promoted they had to win the final to be promoted. Get your facts right Football match was Sunday , Hurling Saturday , No Clash He made the decision not to travel to the hurling final or the Football management made the decision for him. Either way he is a grown man and can make his own decision,. The nonsense he spoke in the article about taking another players position in the final not been fair is a nonsensical statement Sure did he not do that very thing down in Mayo two few week earlier and in the Derry match !!!!!!!! Six years total dedication to the Meath hurlers another statement he made, Clynch playing for county for the last 20 years, Id say and he never once has come out with such a self promoting statement !!!! Players that are truly engaged with playing with the county do not come out with individualistic self serving statements. I wonder how the players playing hurling for Meath feel about his article If he loved hurling so much why did he not stand up to football management when told not to travel with the hurlers on the day of the final. The other statement he made about the squad being put together by a previous management squad 6 years ago is so childish and immature it is pitying. I collect the programs from every game I go to, I looked back at the first final that he played in against Kildare in Parnell park and only 5 of the players listed were involved against Wicklow on the first of April. I think he was totally incorrect and ill advised by who ever advised him this was a good and proper thing to do. No big interview from Mick Burke !!! How long is Micky playing football with County ? How long is he a duel county player ? Not a word out of Micky gardentree (Meath) - Posts: 194 - 12/04/2017 09:49:37 1978699 Link 0 |

Just read JT's 'statement' in the Chronicle, not very classy. Shame he doesn't say how he felt when Andy Mc told him he wasn't to line out with the hurlers that day, in the interest of balance like. He'd have been better off keeping a dignified silence, as the old saying goes 'if you're explaining you're losing'. Wedgie (Meath) - Posts: 253 - 12/04/2017 11:05:42 1978735 Link 0 |
I like that statement "If your explaining your loosing" Sums up his statement article correctly. Any of you guys know if the hurlers are playing a challenge at the weekend ??? gardentree (Meath) - Posts: 194 - 12/04/2017 11:39:35 1978752 Link 0 |
all he said was he found out by text and press was told before he was. both of which was wrong. and it seemed like he wanted to say it was a difficult decision rather than how it was being portrayed... yet ye slate him and no mention of how manager handled it? as the old saying goes... you's are only keyboard warriors! overthehill72 (Meath) - Posts: 334 - 12/04/2017 11:44:00 1978755 Link 2 |
What I was replying to was the fact tohers statement was improper. I heard Mickey burke interview and he was very mature about it all and said "no man is bigger than the team" he wished them all well and kept saying no hard feelings.
