Meath v Laois

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Laois were simply a different class and taught Meath a lesson in hurling at championship level

However, it's a benchmark of where Meath need to get to. I wouldn't say it's a bad or disappointing result as Meath haven't had a game against that sort of opposition in 13 years.

It will refocus the lads for the next game

Win, lose or draw that is exactly the level we want to be playing at. In Hurling you don't get any better by playing teams that are at a similar level or lower, you want to be playing the top teams.
Yesterday was harsh, Laois were good but some of our lads played worse than I've seen them play in a long time. The first touch was poor and Laois were allowed to claim too many balls from the puc out uncontested.
We can normally get goals when we need to and that's a huge plus, we didn't yesterday due to poor finishing, poor shot selection and bad luck. More worryingly we're
still leaking goals at the back, that's something we need to address.
Bad day at the office yesterday but the lads will learn from it.
Onwards and upwards.

Laois are just outside the championship teams. They have been playing the likes of Galway, Offaly and Wexford for the last 3 - 4 years.

They have the championship edge that is alien to the Meath side and it was evident yesterday.

yeah thats a fair comment. meath made a lot of progress quickly so yesterdays result wasn't a surprise.

Pretty much spot on. The first touch point is what I feel is holding Meath hurling back. On Sunday the players seemed to need that extra second to get the sliotar under control (even under no pressure). This is fine in division 2B but against teams like Laois (who have beaten the likes of Offaly and put it up to Galway in recent years) it just puts us under far too much unnecessary pressure.
I think we missed 4 clear cut goal chances yesterday. Also ran into dead ends too often, coughed up possession and ended up conceding at the other end. Just have to put that defeat behind us and get back in the swing of things for the Westmeath game. I think this game will probably be the most important game for Meath hurling in a god knows how long. Staying in Leinster and competing regularly against these teams would be massive for young players coming through the ranks.

Laois well off a top team probably rated 10th or 11th vieing with Offaly for that spot. Strangely meath are in the chasing pack for 12th or 13th along with Westmeath and Kerry and I suppose Antrim following their promotion to 1B.
Somehow it did not feel like that at 5pm yesterday

A tough lesson, but nit unexpected at this grade. Lets hope they can remain at this level for another year

Laois are a county that seem to be perennially stuck at the bottom of the traditional counties and at the top of the weaker counties. It used to be them and Dublin at this level but Dublin then got out of that rut.
