HS Club Hurling Team of the Week

September 21, 2017

The 'ball boys' earn a well deserved break during half time of the Kildalkey v Dunboyne SHC semi final clash at Pairc Tailteann.

There were wins for Kildalkey and Navan O'Mahonys in the two Junior finals while it is Na Fianna v O'Mahonys in the Intermediate. At senior level Kildalkey will attempt to stop a four-in-a-row chasing Kiltale in showpiece decider.

We pick our best XV from last weekends hurling finals and semi-finals.

1 Paul Fagan (Kildalkey): Under immense pressure to perform against his old club and dealt admirably with whatever came his way, a calming influence in the last line of defence for the Village

2 Jack Delaney (Dunboyne): The majority of clearances from the Dunboyne defence came from Delaney's hurl and all were delivered to a team mate, looked assured throughout

3 Shane Brennan (Kilmessan): May have been on the losing side but won his dual with the tricky Ross Ryan hands down.  The county man was strong under the high ball and showed a good turn of pace on occasion as well

4 Martin Doran (Kildalkey): Showed great experience to mop up a lot of loose ball throughout the game while his physical presence is invaluable to their full back line

5 Conor Shiren (Kiltale): Has made the wing back slot his own this year and from there has been central to many of Kiltale's attacks, while his strength in the air has been a huge addition also.

6 Sean McGrath (Dunboyne): Chipped in with four long range points against Kildalkey and did his best to rally his team mates in that narrow defeat at Pairc Tailteann.

7 James Murphy (Navan O'Mahonys): Impressive all year and last Sunday morning in Athboy was no different as Kildalkey were sent packing in the IHC semi-final.

8 Evan Fitzgerald (Kildalkey): The county minor gave an exhibition in midfield at times, scoring four points from play, two of which came at crucial times in the second half. A real star of the future

9 Adam Murphy (Kiltale): The county minor dual star hit 1-7 in the Junior 2 hurling final and came on as a sub for the seniors the following day to score a crucial goal in that semi-final win over Kilmessan

10 Conor Fitzpatrick (Navan O'Mahonys): The best player on the field, scoring four great points, as The Hoops defeated Trim 2-13 to 1-11 to land the Junior Hurling title

11 Jack Regan (Kiltale): Played at corner forward and was the best forward on show as the defending champions progressed to their fourth consecutive final. Lofted over eleven points including two excellent ones from play

12 Tiarnan Bird (Kildalkey): Started instead of new county senior hurling manager Nick Fitzgerald and proceeded to give a man of the Match display for the winners. Scored a crucial second half goal and three impressive points.

13 Mikey Kelly (Navan O'Mahonys): 2-2 for the lively corner forward proved crucial as O'Mahonys advanced to the Intermediate Hurling final with six points to spare over Kildalkey at Athboy.

14 Joe Melia (Kilskyre-Moylagh): A massive display from the full forward who spent a lot of his time out the field. Hit a dozen points in that thrilling extra time IHC semi-final loss at Lomans Park.

15 David Kirby (Na Fianna): Introduced as a second half sub and gave his side a much needed boost, scoring three points using any possession gained wisely as Na Fianna booked their place in the IHC decider.
