Ladies IFC: First half goals win it for Michaels

August 18, 2017

Emma McDonnell gains possession for St.Michaels against St. Colmcilles

St. Michaels 3-08, St. Colmcilles 0-08

Goals and indeed goal chances win matches, St. Michaels created 3 chances and took them whereas the home side never threatened the St. Michaels net-minder Laura Duignan following her sides nine point victory in this Divinity Tile & Bathroom IFC match played in Piltown last evening. The winners posted three majors in the opening half, the first after 40 seconds and they opened up a significant gap when posting two more in a five minute spell in the second quarter, both converted clinically and neatly by Seona Lynch and Patricia Owens, thereafter St. Michaels ladies were able to respond whenever their scoring advantage was threatened.

Seona and Erin Lynch and Sinéad McCormack added four first half points between them to lead by 3-4 to 0-8 at the interval.

Erin Lynch opened the second half scoring with a point which the home side cancelled out seven minutes later, McCormack followed up with two minors after good work by O'Brien. The St. Colmcilles girls enjoyed their best spell of the match midway through the last quarter when they posted four unanswered points in a three minute spell, however credit must go to the St. Michaels full and half back lines who were imperious throughout, their sextet of forwards made the most of the ball supplied by the hard working mid-field pairing of McCormack and Alicia Curtis with some defence splitting runs and Seona Lynch completed the scoring with a great solo effort on 57 minutes.

St. Michaels team & scorers: Laura Duignan; Hayley Doyle, Ellen Cassidy, Emma McDonnell; Mary Carpenter, Mary Clinton, Lorraine Curtis; Alicia Curtis, Sinéad McCormack (0-3);  Marion Farrelly, Erin Lynch (0-2), Seona Lynch (1-3); Yvonne Farrelly, Patricia Owens (1-0), Megan O'Brien (1-0).
