Gerry Reilly Cup: Meath aiming for first title in ten years

July 28, 2017

Meath joint captains Colin Hawdon and Conor Hetherton will be hoping to keep the Gerry reilly Cup in Oldcastle

Meath take on Monaghan in the Gerry Reilly Cup Under 16 Football Tournament final this Sunday.

The tournament commemorates Gerry Reilly who died tragically in December '87 at 16 years of age, and he had already proved to be a great footballer with huge potential to go on to great heights in the game.

Both teams have been impressive in their group winning their three games. It's Monaghan's first appearance in the final while the young Royals will be aiming for their first Cup success since 2007.

A Pat Coyle managed Meath defeated Dublin ten years ago in the decider at a packed Gilson Park Oldcastle. That Meath team included Ciaran Lenehan, Damien Carroll, Bryan Menton, Mark O'Sullivan, Sean Tobin and David Larkin all who went on to represent the county at senior level.

Under the guidance of Joe Treanor and his back room team of Paul Nestor, Paul Murphy, Paddy Gilsenan, Owen Ganly and Garrett Fitzsimons Meath topped Group A with wins over Longford, Louth and Laois and have scored an impressive 13 goals and 53 points in doing so.

Monaghan recorded wins over Wicklow, Westmeath and a highly fancied Dublin to reach their first final.
