July 18, 2017

Castletown's Jamie McMahon

Castletown 1-13 Skryne 1-11

Castletown gave their Division 3 B title hopes a boost with this two point victory against the table toppers tonight in Skryne. This was a very enjoyable B League match played on a surface even Jim Gavin couldn't fault on a perfect evening for football, credit to Skryne's grounds staff.

Jamie Mc Mahon opened the visitors account after 2 minutes and a minute later Skryne replied with their first. Castletown then scored five points in a row Declan Cribbin with two, Jason Ross with two and one more for Jamie Mc Mahon to leave it six points to one after 15 minutes. Skryne then scored 1-1 to pull back their deficit to one point after 24 minutes. But the eventual winners scored 1-1 in the last 2 minutes of the half the goal from Jason Ross and Robbie Hoey with a point.

The home side started the second period strongly and scored 3 points in a row and with 47 minutes gone they were level and went a point up a minute later. Castletown then drew level and Skryne scored again to retake the lead but Castletown had the last say with three points in a row to win by two points. The winners second half scorers were Robbie Hoey and Jamie Mc Mahon with two points each and one each for John Donegan and Noel Smyth.

Skryne Report

Skryne 1-11 Castletown 1-13

Skryne and Castletown served up an excellent game of football in Skryne this evening in this B League Div 3 match. In ideal conditions both teams although short some regulars played football as it should be played with no quarter asked or given throughout.
Castletown began better than Skryne and led by six points to one after fourteen minutes. A well worked Skryne goal from the boot of Sean Cassidy and a point from Kevin O'Reilly left the minimum between the sides and it was nip and tuck from there to the end. Castletown seemed to gain the upper hand again with a goal just before half time to lead at the break by 1-7 to 1-2.

But it was Skryne who scored the first three points of the second half to open up the game once more. With ten minutes to go Skryne went in front for the first time with a point from John Quinn but Castletown fought hard right to the end to edge back in front. Despite Kevin O'Reilly adding a pointed free for the Blues, the Green and Gold men had two frees of their own and a perfect long range point to hold on in an exciting finish.

Well done to both teams for showing there is nothing wrong with B League football when it is played in the right spirit as this game was.
