B FL Div 3: Bragging rights for St. Ultans

July 18, 2017

St Ultans Mark Allen

Dunderry 0-13 St Ultans GFC 1-11

St Ultans pipped Dunderry to the two points in this competitive Div 3 B-league game, played in Dunderry.

Conditions were perfect when Dunderry opened the scoring. The Ultans response was quick however. Midfielder Mark Allen equalised when he was played in by a great pass by Darren Kavanagh. Kavanagh then got on the score board himself. Followed by his brother Eoin who struck over a free to leave the Ultans 0-03 points to 0-01 up after 7 minutes.

Dunderry then increased the tempo of the game scoring the next two points to level things up. And only for a wonder save from Ultans goalie, Robbie Daly, Dunderry would have had a goal.

St Ultans again responded well. Scoring the next two points. One from Mark Allen's left boot. The other a well taken free from Eoin Kavanagh. The big score of the half came shortly after this. A high ball into the Dunderry full backline caused havoc, this allowed Paul Murray to fist the ball to the net. Éanán Peppard and Mark Allen then added to the scoreboard. Leaving the away team leading 1-08 to 0-03 points after 20 minutes.

This was as good as it got for the Ultans men in the first half. Dunderry went on to score the last four points of the half. Leaving it 1-08 to 0-07 points at the break.

Dunderry started where they left off before half-time. Scoring another five points in the first 10 minutes of the second half to lead by a point. It was up to Eoin Kavanagh to reply again by scoring from a free after Darren Kavanagh had been hauled down after a good run.

Eoin scored another free to level the game with only 9 minutes remaining. Dunderry scored what looked like the winner on the 55 minute mark. Ultans rallied though. And on his debut, after a good run, Brian Byrne was fouled close to the goals. Eoin Kavanagh again stepped up and under pressure tied the match.

St Ultans won the next kickout and went on the attack. Kevin Galligan made some room for himself and slotted over the winner in the 31st minute with his reliable left foot.

The win gives St Ultans a great boost ahead of their next Junior C championship game against Trim on Friday evening in Kildalkey. Plus it's great to see more young footballers joining the club like Éanán Peppard, Brian Byrne and Aaron Ball.

St Ultans were best served by Eoin McLoughlin, Éanán Peppard, Brian Byrne and Robbie Daly.
