Martin Ennis has released a statement in the wake of his resignation as manager of the Meath senior hurlers.

It was revealed last Friday that the Athboy man had announced he's stepping down from the Royal post after three seasons in charge.

Ennis enjoyed a successful stint at the Meath helm, leading the county to a maiden Christy Ring Cup success in 2016 and a return to the All-Ireland's top tier for the first time in 13 years.

He also led the Royals to Kehoe Cup success in 2015 and the Allianz Hurling League Division 2B title this year.

Meath GAA have thanked Ennis for the 'magnificent' service he gave to the county since his appointment in 2014.

Ennis issued the following statement via Meath GAA this afternoon, saying it was 'an honour and a privilege' to manage his native county:

"It has been an honour and a privilege to manage the Meath senior hurling team for the past 3 years.

"After taking time out and talking with family and friends I have decided not to seek reappointment for a 4th term.

"This has not been an easy decision to make, especially with the achievements during this time.

"Winning a Keogh Cup in 2015 and moving to the Walsh Cup, winning the first Christy Ring Cup in 2016 and moving to the Leinster championship for the first time in 13 years, winning the national hurling league Division 2B in 2017."

"I want to express my sincere thanks to all involved in this success. To the backroom team who worked with me relentlessy and dedicated their time for Meath hurling's cause over 3 years.

"To the county board for their commitment and support.

"Also to Uniflu for their generous sponsorship and support.

"To the supporters for believing in us on those memorable days in Croke Park.

"I want to thank every player who put on a Meath jersey in my 3 years as manager, for their full commitment belief and determination they showed and the results they achieved.

"I wish the Meath senior hurling team every success in the future."
