Kilbride remember Owen Sullivan

The late Owen Sullivan (front row with football) and the 1962 Kilbride Intermediate football panel at Pairc Tailteann.

The recent death of Owen Sullivan St. Margaret's caused widespread regret and sorrow in St. Margaret's, Kilbride and surrounding areas. Owen was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Writing in the Kilbride G.F.C. golden jubilee programme in 1998 Owen described his early days with Kilbride G.F.C. as follows:

"I was born when my family was living at Ballintry Lodge between Kilbride and Clonee. My mother was from Batterstown Co Meath and my father was from The Ward in Co Dublin. When I as about 10 years of age my family moved to Irishtown The Ward and I attended Kilbride National School and at that time Meath won their first All Ireland football final. I was football crazy at the time to the extent that I asked my mother could I spend my summer holidays with her family in Batterstown , knowing that Brian Smith the Meath captain lived next door. About the year 1950 I was approached to play for the Kilbride junior team in Dunshaughlin and the team wore black and blue jerseys."

Owen was a solo run expert and one of the best half forwards in Meath. He later moved to the left full back position where he was equally adept. He was a member of all the successful Kilbride teams of the 1960s and 1970s and captained the intermediate winning side of 1962. He won Meath junior, intermediate, senior championship and Feis cup medals with the club. A lifelong supporter of the club Owen received a Meath Sean Gael award in 2008. He also played junior and senior football with Meath.

After his retirement he looked after juvenile teams in St. Margaret's and one of the highlights of his time in St. Margaret's was acting as umpire at games in Croke Park.

Owen is sadly missed by his loving wife Ann, his children Angela, Shirley, Linda and Owen, by his adoring grandchildren Sean, Tom, Zachary and Holly, sons- in- law Stephen, Brian and Ed, daughter in- law- Pamela, sisters, relatives and friends to whom the members of Kilbride G.F.C. extend their deepest sympathy

The funeral took place from St. Margaret's Church to St. Declan's Cemetery Ashbourne.

Ar dhies De go raibh a anam uasal.
