The opening round of the senior football championship is over. There was one game on Wednesday, two on Thursday, five on Friday and the last one was played yesterday, Sunday May 21st.

Neighbours Dunboyne and Dunshaughlin opened the campaign with a Wednesday night fixture in Pairc Tailteann. Dunboyne were the better team over the hour but things could have been so different had Fergus Toolan's shot found the back of the net for Dunshaughlin midway through the second half.

Donal Keogan was immense as Rathkenny stayed with favourites Donaghmore Ashbourne for the hour. John Broderick hit 1-5 from full forward for the Moores who looked a little shaky without Andy Tormey, James Colgan, Michael Deegan and Seanie Curran.

Ryan Farnham was the toast of Kells after scoring a late late goal to seal a good win for Gaeil Colmcille over Wolfe Tones at Athboy. Farnham was only on the pitch as a blood sub and most of the talk after the game was on the red card issued to Tones keeper Trevor Browne by David Gough.

Are Moynalvey the 'Dark Horses' this year? Manager Darren Fay certainly has the squad to trouble the best. Boosted by the return of county hurlers Anthony Forde and Mark O'Sullivan they made light work of a fancied Seneschalstown in Lomans Park.

There's always an upset or two and the biggest one this time round was the easy win St Patricks had over Skryne at Duleek. It was a fitting tribute to former player and committee member Peter Russell who passed away during the week.

Much of the talk before the start of the campaign centered around the form of Navan O'Mahony's. Could a shock be on the cards in Dunshaughlin? The Hoops dismissed all of that with three to spare over a spirited Blackhall Gaels.

It was billed as the clash of the champions and it lived up to it as Simonstown and St Colmcilles played out a very entertaining open game of football at Pairc Tailteann. The Cilles will feel that they should have got something from this one and nearly did but the experience shown by Simonstown, especially with the last play of the game, won the day.

Ratoath are another one to keep an eye on. Two time finalists and experienced Na Fianna side  stood in their way in round one but with all their county men on board and Eamon Wallace hitting 1-2 they left Dunsany with both points in the bag.

Summerhill and Duleek Bellewstown completed round 1 yesterday at headquarters. Duleek Bellewstown gave as good as they got for the opening 45 minutes and played some very good football but Summerhill are an experienced outfit and despite kicking some very poor wides they finished comfortable winners.
