Seneschalstown opened their 2016 Coca Cola Ladies Senior Football Championship with a deserved win over Dee Rangers in Meath Hill. The pitch was in excellent condition despite a heavy downpour leading up to the game which made conditions a little slippy underfoot.
The opening ten minutes of this game was an even affair and Dee Rangers opened the scoring in the second minute. Seneschalstown kicked a few early wides but got back on terms in the fourth minute with a point from Natasha Mullen and went in front for the first time two minutes later with a point from Fiona O'Rourke. From the tenth to the twentieth minutes Dee Rangers had their best spell of the game playing some good football and scored five points with a solitary response from Amy Gilsenan from play in the fifteenth minute to leave the score at 0-06 to 0-03 after twenty minutes.
The last ten minutes of the half were dominated by the Furze girls who tagged on eight points without reply. Stacey Grimes opened her account with a free in the twenty first minute which was soon followed by O'Rourke's second point from play almost immediately. Grimes knocked over further frees in the twenty fifth and sixth minutes before Grainne Nulty opened her account a minute later. Grimes then added another free sandwiched in between two points from play from Kiah Geraghty on the run into the break to leave the HT score at 0-06 to 0-11 in favour of the Seneschalstown Ladies.
The second half started with a few changes for the home team and they opened the scoring in the thirty second minute which was cancelled out by a Grimes free a minute later. The home team upped the tempo and had the deficit cut to two points after eleven minutes of the second half. However, the next few minutes were to prove crucial as following another Grimes free and a long range point from Nulty, Louise "Cheesey" Coyle struck for the only goal of the game in the forty fifth minute.
O'Rourke popped over her third point in the forty seventh minute before Grimes added her seventh point from a free a minute later. Mena Sheridan then got in on the scoring act with a fine point from play in the forty ninth minute. The home side didn't give up and pressed on but good defending from the Furze Ladies repelled some dangerous attacks. Grimes closed the scoring for the winners with her eight point of the evening in injury time and the home team added the final score of the game soon after.
This was a workmanlike performance and with the county Champions St Ultans up next on Tuesday July 5th in Fr. Tully Park at 20:00 a winning start was welcome.
