Meath Hill 2-15 St. Ultan's 2-07
After a disappointing display and result against Senechalstown in the Junior A Championship last Sunday in Drumconrath, we were looking to get back to winning ways in the Division 2 A League.
Meath Hill put in an improved performance on Saturday evening when they welcomed the arrival of St. Ultan's to Meath Hill for what was a perfect evening for a game of football.
Meath Hill got the scoring going with the opening point courtesy of Pierce McGrath but St. Ultan's soon levelled matters on 3 minutes. Meath Hill started to dominate after this and scored the next two points, Tommy Rooney and Ian Malone (free) on target. Meath Hill would extend their advantage in the 14th minute after some pin ball in the St. Ultan's penalty area, the ball was finally put to the net by Pierce McGrath. Another pointed free from Ian Malone on 18 minutes extended our advantage, 1-04 to 0-01. Meath Hill should have been ahead by more but for some wayward shooting in front of goal, and St. Ultan's ended a scoreless period of 17 minutes with a point to narrow the gap. This was quickly followed by a St. Ultan's goal after a poor pass out of the Meath Hill defence was dispossessed. Meath Hill again extended their lead with points from Chris Yorke (free) and Jason Yorke. On 31 minutes Dominic Yorke made a great one on one stop to keep some distance between the sides at half time.
Half Time: Meath Hill 1-07 St. Ultan's 1-02
Meath Hill looked like they forgot to reappear after the restart with St. Ultan's scoring an unanswered 1-03 in the opening 9 minutes to lead the game for the first time, 1-07 to 2-05. Meath Hill finally scored in the 11th minute, another point from Jason Yorke. This was the kick-start Meath Hill needed in the second half and they would hit an unanswered 1-03 of their own. Points coming from Derek McMahon, Jason Yorke and Keith Ginnity. The crucial score came on 54 minutes after a very good hand passing move from the halfway line was fisted to the net by Ian Malone to extend Meath Hill's lead, 2-11 to 2-05. St. Ultan's stemmed the flow with a point on 55 minutes. Meath Hill finished out the game the stronger and with the result not in doubt for some time now. Meath Hill outscored the visitors 0-04 to 0-02 in the closing minutes. Two Ian Malone points, Barry Kieran and Thomas McGrath pointing with the last kick of the game.
The margin of victory could and should have been more for the Hill, only for some poor shooting in front of goal by the home side. We make the trip next Sunday to Ratoath for Round 8 of the Division 2 A League.
