Davis Cup: Last gasp Kilmessan goal in extra-time ends it for Na Fianna

May 22, 2016

Na Fianna's Barry Slevin

A last minute Kilmessan goal in extra time put an end to Na Fianna's entry into the Brendan Davis Cup Final.

Kilmessan 1-15 Na Fianna 0-16

It was a close, physical contest between the teams in Athboy last Tuesday evening. Both missed opportunities throughout the game . Only two points were between the teams at half time - Na Fianna 0-5, Kilmessan 0-07.

In the second half, Na Fianna began to dominate as they reduced Kilmessan's four point lead to bring them into extra time with 12 points a piece at full time.

Na Fianna were the fitter team in extra time but a goal from Kilmessan in the last few minutes put pressure on Na Fianna to claw back two points as well as prevent Kilmessan from adding to their tally.

Perhaps with a little composure & steadiness from Na Fianna, they might have put their wides over the bar bringing them to at least a replay.

Some fine points were scored from both sides but Barry Slevin's scoring from play & placed balls was something you might think you would only see in Semple Stadium or Croke Park.

Na Fianna. E Reilly, N O'Sullivan, D Gleeson, C Cosgrave, R Byrne, P Slevin, D Lyons, D Bailey,  E Mullally, C Slattery, J McCloskey (0-2), S Burke, W Flynn,  B Slevin (0-11), M Slevin (0-3).

Subs: D Downey for S Burke (blood sub), N Burke for D Bailey.
