FL Div 4: Kilbride share the spoils with local rivals

July 31, 2015

Kilbride's Emmet Farrell.

St. Pauls  1-12 : 2-9  Kilbride, 29th July 2015

Both teams took to the field in this final round of A League division 4 with weakened teams due to holidays and injuries. Despite this, the crowd in attendance were treated to an exciting encounter between these local rivals and referee Mick Ryan did his best to let the game flow with a "light" use of the whistle.

St. Pauls started brightly and dominated the opening 15 minutes to pull ahead by 4 points. Kilbride finally got going through a quickfire 1-2 from Conor Doyle who led the full forward line very well. Kilbride now had a foothold in the match but could not convert possession into scores and St. Paul's managed to tag a few more points on to lead at the break by 0-9 to 1-3.

A ding dong battle was being had in the engine room of midfield between "old stagers" Anthony Moyles of St. Pauls and Brian White of Kilbride. No quarter was given by either man with honours  even in this battle and many supporters felt that they were the 2 best players on the field. White has been proving this season that he was at least the equal of most men who played for Meath in the last 15 years.

After the break, St. Pauls tagged on some good scores to pull ahead before Kilbride finally clicked into gear. Kilbride's half back line of David O'Leary, Garret Lynch and Stephen Walsh came into the game and created some momentum which resulted in some great team scores.

A great team move started in the back line by Peter Roche was carried on by Steven McMullen and finished to the net by Conor Doyle to bring Kilbride right back into contention. Points from Conor Storey edged Kilbride in front before Conor Doyle bravely contested a high ball before being brought down for a penalty. Brian White "converted" the penalty over the bar to push Kilbride 3 points ahead with 1 minute remaining.

However, the Fat Lady had not burst into song yet on a breezy night in Clonee. With seconds remaining, a long punt into towards the Kilbride square was gathered by St. Pauls full forward Paul "wally" Watters and he somehow navigated through the crowd to find the onion sack. Draw match 1-12 to 2-9.

The spoils were shared in this absorbing encounter and there were not many rumbles of discontent from the crowd who got their money's worth over the 60 minutes. Kilbride are now unbeaten in 5 matches ahead of a key championship match against Moynalvey.
