FL Div 4: Return to winning ways for Kilmainhamwood

July 23, 2015

Kilmainhamwood's Stephen Kiernan.

Clonard  1-13  Kilmainhamwood  3-08

Kilmainhamwood returned to winning ways with a one point victory over Clonard, played in Clonard, Wednesday evening last the 22nd of July. The 'Wood headed into the match with a couple of injury concerns and with them missing the influential Philip Moran, this made the task at hand that little bit harder.

This was a very competitive affair and with Clonard registering the first score through county star Adam Flanagan, the 'Wood responded with their first point from Stephen Kiernan, following this, Kiernan was again bearing down on goal only to be taken down, but the resulting penalty was well saved by the Clonard keeper. This save spurred Clonard on and they kicked an unanswered 1-02, to give them a three point lead midway through the first half. But Kilmainahmwood responded with 1-02 of their own, through another Kiernan point and 1-01 from forward Russell. At this stage, the 'Wood lost influential forward Paudi Owens through injury and Clonard kicked a further two points before the break, but again the 'Wood responded through a well taken Michael Shankey goal, to put them one in front heading into half-time on a score line of 2-03 to 1-05.

Like the first half, Clonard kicked the first score of the second half, to level matters, both teams were trading scores, even though the 'Wood had the majority of the possession they could not make it count as they kicked a couple of wides, leaving Clonard with a chance to come back into this match. Clonard registered eight second half points, but the 'Wood responded to these scores, through another goal and two points from forward Russell and three points from Kiernan, two which came from frees. The 'Wood were reduced to 14 near the end, after forward Flood received a second yellow. But in all what was a tight match, the 'Wood ran out one point winners on a scoreline of 3-08 to 1-13.
