Ladies IFC: St Michaels too strong for Gaels

July 21, 2015

St Michaels Megan O'Brien gets away from Claire Burke Blackhall Gaels during the Ladies IFC game at Carlanstown.

St. Michaels 2-16, Blackhall Gaels 0-5

Despite missing a few regulars St. Michaels proved too good for visitors Blackhall Gaels in Carlanstown on Monday evening. They raced out of the traps and by the end of the first quarter led by 0-7 to 0-1 following points from Megan O'Brien 0-3 and one each from Patricia Owens, Marion Farrelly, Sharon Callaghan and Sinéad McCormack. However they went off the boil for the entire second quarter after Alicia Curtis got sin binned and it was during this passage of play that Blackhall were at their best sending over 4 points without reply. Marion Farrelly brought St. Michaels back to life with a point on 29 minutes, this was quickly followed by a well executed goal from Seona Lynch and O'Brien, Owens and Ella Reilly added a further point apiece in the three minutes of injury time to lead 1-11 to 0-5 at the interval.

Blackhall Gaels took the game to their hosts in the second period however they could do everything but score. St. Michaels steadied the ship with some good defending from Ellen Cassidy, Lorraine Curtis, Megan O'Brien, Sinéad McCormack and Hayley Doyle and coupled with a couple of fine saves from Laura Duignan they kept the visitors at bay, and as Christy Regan and Co began introducing fresh legs the momentum left the game somewhat. The home side owned all the second half scoring rights adding 1-5 without reply, the goal coming from the boot of Alicia Curtis on 47 minutes.
