FL Div 4: Slane comfortably dispatch Clonard

July 07, 2015

Slane's Declan Kearns

Slane 2-14   Clonard 2-6

Slane made it two wins in a week against higher graded opponents when comfortably dispatching of Junior A side Clonard in Slane on Sunday afternoon.  Confidence was high in the Slane camp after their excellent win earlier in the week but it was Clonard who were to register the first score of the match.  This however was to be as good as it got for the travelling side as Slane took complete control of the match for the remainder of the half.  The Slane equaliser came from the boot of Alan Harding and he was to be the first of nine different scorers for the Boynesiders in the first half.  Slane moved into a purple patch as they scored five unanswered points that included superb team play and flashes of individual skill with points coming from Danny Carolan, Dermot Lynch, Harding, Declan Kearns and Gareth Kealy.  The Slane midfield and attack were in complete control but they were excellently supported by a dominant defence who continuously made blocks and put their body on the line which was highlighted by a heroic block from full back Rory Finnegan.  Clonard reduced the deficit with 2 points before Slane pushed on again with an excellent pointed free from Podge McGowan which was followed by a 45 from Slane goalkeeper Darren Berrill.  Jim Marry and Eoin Gibbs were full of energy and drove Slane on from midfield throughout and it was the two midfielders who finished Slane first half scoring with a well taken point from Gibbs and a goal from Marry to leave the blues 9 points in front at half time.

Half Time: Slane 1-09 Clonard 0-3

Slane started the second half as they finished the first with another well taken point from McGowan.  Slane didn't let up and after a great attacking move that ended in the hands of Carolan he powerfully finished to the back of the Clonard net.  Slane were then guilty of taking their foot off the gas as they conceded a sloppy 1-2 in a short period of time before again responding.  Kearns then helped himself to a brace of points with his second coming from a superb catch and pass from wing back Eanna Mooney.  The two sides traded scores again with the Slane point coming from McGowan before a high ball into the Slane defence was misjudged and caught and finished to the back of the net to reduce the deficit.  Slane kept the best score of the match until last when a move involving 9 players, one-twos, hand passes and kick passes was finished by Carolan to give Slane a well earned and impressive 8 point victory.

Full Time: Slane 2-14 Clonard 2-6

This was another very good performance from an improving Slane side with superb defending and attacking that had nine different scorers.
