HS Team of the Minor Football Finals

July 03, 2015

The minor football league Division 2 Cup is in safe hands.

The last week has been hectic with minor football finals taking place in all four grades. Wolfe Tones (Division 1 v St Colmcilles), Skyrne (Division 2 v Simonstown Gaels), Oldcastle (Division 3 v Na Fianna) and North Meath Gaels (Division 4 v Blackwater Gaels) claimed the silverware. We pick the fifteen players who stood out for us.

1. Dean Reddy (Skryne)
Have Meath found a new Stephen Cluxton? The Skryne number 1 found his man with every kick out. Solid and composed under any type of ball and kept his defence on their toes despite picking up an injury in the opening half.

2. Mossy Flood (Oldcastle)
Minor again next year. Gave an exhibition of how a corner back should defend as Oldcastle claimed their first ever minor title.

3. Oisin Greyson (Skryne)
Manned the edge of the square to great effect. One of the main reasons a much vaunted Simonstown attack was held to five points.

4. Sean Carr (Wolfe Tones)
Very effective in his defensive duties. Stole forward in the first half to kick a wonderful point.

5. Dylan Garrigan (Oldcastle)
Small in stature but big in heart. Time and again broke up Na Fianna attacks and made great use of possession on a historic night for the North Meath town.

6. Cian O'Neill (Wolfe Tones)
Broke up numerous Colmcilles attack. His support play and tackling were one of the highlights of the game.

7. Darragh Campion (Skryne)
One of the real bright sparks on the minor front and underage again next year. Oustanding in defence and even better at coming forward with possession.

8. Jason Scully (Oldcastle)
The driving force behind this team. Hit 1-6 as Na Fianna were defeated in the Division 3 decider at Pairc Tailteann.

9. James Mooney (North Meath Gaels)
Probably the best performer from all four finals. He covered every blade of grass in Pairc Tailteann for the amalgamation side. Ended up scoring a goal and two points.

10. Matthew Melady (Wolfe Tones)
The hard running half forward took the fight to St Colmcilles from the word go. Won loads of breaking ball around the middle and proved a great link man between defence and attack.

11. Thomas O'Reilly (Wolfe Tones)
Banished the county minor blues with a great display on the forty. The club and county captain sent over six points.

12. Stephen Meegan (Blackwater Gaels)
A real danger to North Meath Gaels for the hour in the Division 4 decider. Scored 1-3 and set up numerous scores for the Kilmainham, Drumbaragh Carnaross combination.

13. Jason Fox (Skryne)
Played a captain's part in the win over Simonstown. A real play maker and his ten points inspired the Tara boys to victory.

14. Saran O'Fionnagain (Wolfe Tones)
It was some display from the Tones youngster at full forward. Won every ball that came his way, gave the Colmcille defence a run around and sent over five great points.

15. James Conlon (St Colmcilles)
On a poor night for a much vaunted Colmcilles outfit Conlon was their only bright spark. Kicked five points and gave the Tones defence some anxious moments.
