AFL4: K'wood and Paul's draw

May 15, 2015

Kilmainhamwood's Stephen Kiernan.

Kilmainhamwood 2-06
St. Paul's 1-09

Kilmainhamwood made the long trip up to St. Paul's Thursday evening last the 14th of May, to come out with just a draw against their Junior B opponents.

The North Meath men were down on numbers heading into this game, due to injuries and players working away from home, but despite this they took the lead through a Micheal Flood point. The first half was keenly contested by both sides until a Stephen Kiernan goal put the 'Wood four to the good, heading into the break, 1-05 to 0-04 to the good.

They started the second half as they finished the first with a well worked goal from wing forward Paul Carolan, to extend Kilmainhamwood's lead to seven. But St. Paul's did not give up and scored the next three points to put four between the sides, before being awarded a penalty, which was converted to cut the 'Woods lead to one.

St. Paul's again followed this up with another two unanswered scores to take the lead for the first time with minutes remaining. Kilmainhamwood had their chances in the dying minutes but could not make them count and only for a Stephen Kiernan free in the last minute, to draw the teams level and rescue a point for the North Meath men.

Best for the 'Wood was Alan Carolan in defence and Micheal Flood in attack.

Kilmainhamwood: D. Russell, P. Clarke, P. Barber, J. Collins, P. Moran, A. Carolan, P. Flood, S. Clarke, G. Yorke, P. Carolan (1-00), M. Shankey, D. Russell, A. Farrelly, M. Flood (0-02), S. Kiernan (1-03, 0-02f) Subs: M. Berrill for P. Carolan.

St.Paul's got of the mark in the ACFL division 4 with a share of the spoils against Junior A side Kilmainhamwood on Thursday night at home in pace.

K/wood started the better team and were soon 3-1 ahead after 15min. The Paul's improved somewhat in the next quarter with Anthony Moyles and A.Minch scoring some nice points, however the visitors finished the half stronger and a well finished goal just before half time had them in front 1-5 to 0-4.The 2nd half was less than 5mins gone when the visitors struck again with another goal well finished by their lively half forward. It looked like the Paul's were heading for another defeat...but with Anthony Moyles calling the shots in the middle, St. Paul's chipped away at the lead and with 10 mins to go had got back to 4pts down. Then Anthony Barker of St. Paul's was taken down for a penalty after one of his many trademark runs into the danger area. Paul Nestor calmly put away the spot kick (Ronaldo like)!!! The Paul's quickly leveled it and then went one up with time running out.  Mind you the Paul's can thank Conor Martin in goals for making a couple of fine saves to prevent the visitors from securing victory. They did however win themselves a free 30m out in injury time, which they converted, leaving the score level at full time St.Paul's 1-9 Kilmainhamwood 2-6.
