Clann Na nGaels Louise O'Connor closes in on Ellen Cassidy St Michaels

Two games in four days proved too much for the ladies of St. Michaels as they went under to a much hungrier Clan na nGael side in Rathcarn on Saturday evening last in the Division 2 Football League.

St. Michaels 1-11, Clann na nGael 5-11.

St. Michaels raced into an early lead after points from Aisleen Regan 0-2, Sinead McCormack 0-2 & Marion Farrelly 0-1, however the home side rallied and by the 18th minute had cut the deficit to just a single point. Marion Farrelly set up Alicia Curtis who stretched the lead to two points  but once again back came Clan na nGael to leave the minimum between the sides again. The ever probing Marion Farrelly registered two more points from play before Clan na nGael hit the first of a handful of goals to level the match on 27 minutes. Sinead McCormack completed the first half scoring for the visitors but as the first half entered the second minute of injury time the home side struck for their second goal to leave them with a two point lead at the break 2-5 to 0-9.

Clan na nGael began the second half as the finished the first and had 1-2 on the board in the opening 6 minutes. The fire was now gone from the St. Michaels bellies and they could only manage a solitary goal in 22 minutes of play which came from Alicia Curtis as try as they might they could not break through the home side's defence and all their efforts seemed insignificant as Clan na nGael's fighting spirit prospered. Aisleen Regan added a point on 53 minutes to leave it 1-10 to 4-8 and two minutes later a glimmer of hope arose for St. Michaels when they were awarded a penalty after Regan was brought down in the square, unfortunately for them nothing came of it as Aoife Lally saved brilliantly. Farrelly completed the scoring for St. Michaels as the home side scored at will raking up a second half tally of 3-6.

Along with the scorers others who tried hard were Patricia Owens, Mary Carpenter Nakietha Carolan, Mary Clinton and Aine Sheridan.
