Issue of abuse of referees at underage games raised

Juvenile Chairman Jim Condra

Juvenile chairman Jim Condra was strongly critical of the abuse of referees from supporters at underage games at the April meeting of the Meath County Committee in Aras Tailteann.

"I would not be too happy with the comments from spectators about referees. Also some of the language being used is unacceptable, especially with children listening," said the Kilmainhamwood clubman.

Referees' co-ordinator Donal Smyth said he was glad to hear Condra raising the matter, saying that abuse of referees at underage matches is a problem in the county.  Smyth added that such incidents can be a deterrent to people wishing to take up refereeing.

The juvenile chairman also slated the practice of mentors encroaching onto the playing area, remarking that some of the offenders could venture up to 20 metres out on the pitch.

Condra also called for better punctuality by teams for games, stating that it was unfair to keep referees waiting, especially as some of them could be going on to officiate at another venue.

He also called for the use of mouth guards by players, remarking that while they are not compulsory, it is important that players are protected. Condra added that insurance companies will not listen to claims for injuries sustained without the guards.
