The late Gerry Gaughran

The late Gerry Gaughran

We are sad to relate the death of former Ballinlough player and club chairman Gerry Gaughran.

From a family with long GAA associations in north Meath, Gerry had the distinction of winning senior football medals with his adopted Syddan in 1951 and 1952 and doubled up in '52 with a Feis Cup award. He had gone to work in the Syddan area at the farm of Meath footballing legend Ted Meade, then a Royal County senior selector.

Gerry returned to his native Ballinlough in 1953 and the following year was part of a fine team which claimed Meath intermediate championship honours. The Lough were to stay in the senior grade until 1973.

Ironically Gerry became chairman in Ballinlough's first year back in intermediate level . Even though the club was in decline on the field of play, he went on to become a highly effective leader and acted in that role for most of the seventies.

Gerry was club chairman when Ballinlough opened their fine new gounds in 1976. Meath and neighbours Cavan honoured the occasion in front of 3,000 people.

Gerry Gaughran was a very enthusiastic chairman, wore his heart on his sleeve and in his own unique way always got the job completed.

In later years Gerry remained a passionate supporter of Ballinlough, never missed a club game, often acting as a sponsor and was club president at the time of his death.

He is survived by wife Breege, sons John and Denis, both played underage for the club and by daughter Noeleen who was married to the late Thomas Ward, a fine player with Carnaross.
