Curraha's Andrew Battersby

St Vincent's/Curraha 4-15
Walterstown 1-3

St Vincent's/Curraha got their Minor League Division 2 campaign off to a flying start last Friday, 20th February with an emphatic win over a gallant Walterstown outfit in a bitterly cold Masterson Park in Ardcath.

Right from the throw-in the home team looked determined to stamp their authority on the game and Sean Moore lobbed over a sweet point with less than a minute on the clock. St Vincent's/Curraha continued to press forward and were rewarded witha fisted goal from Conor Moriarty after good work by Andrew Battersby. Minutes later, Moriarty turned provider for Battersby with the latter making no mistake to raise the second green flag of the night. Walterstown battled bravely and were rewarded with 2 points in quick succession which kept the home side in check. St Vincent'sCurraha powered ahead and after further points from Battersby and Moore, Moriarty added his second and St Vincent's/Curraha's third. Walterstown continued to fight for every ball and a quick breakaway yielded a fine goal after some good running and passing from the away team.Their scores however, were limited due to some stout defending from David Morgan. Ryan Hand and Niall Murphy. Futher points were added to the home side's tally before the break from the impressive Kevin Laffey at midfield,  a wonderful strike from Sean Keogh out on the right wing and a great run and point from full-back Niall Murphy to leave the half-time score St Vincent's/Curraha 3-9, Walterstown 1-3.

The second half never really lived up to the excellent football of the first half and scores were few.A rasping shot from Andrew Battersby was tipped over the bar when a goal looked odds on. Sean Moore added another point before a move up the left wing involving 4 players ended with the ball at Conor Moriarty's feet and he cooly slotted the ball into the far corner of the net. In fairness, Walterstown never gave up and try as they might some poor shooting and the resolute home defence  meant that they were unable to add to thir half-time tally. St Vincent's/Curraha finished the game strongly with substitute Brandon McMahon slotting over 3 points and substitute Ian Battersby splitting the posts to bring the game to an end.

Best for St Vincent's/Curraha were David Morgan, Kevin Laffey, Sean Moore, Andrew Battersby and Conor Moriarty.
