Awards: best performance in a MFC final

January 14, 2015

The celebrations begin for Trim with the Liam Tolan Cup at Skryne.

Championship titles for Dunboyne, Trim, Killary Emmets, Moynalty and Nobber. We pick our best performers in the finals and our overall winner.

St Peters Dunboyne took both Division 1 league and championship titles with final victories over Summerhill and St Colmcilles respectively. Trim were too strong for Seneschalstown in the Division 2 final. Killary Emmets needed a replay to see off St Patricks in the Division 3 decider while there were also honours for Moynalty (Division 4) and Nobber (Division 5).

Our best performers are:

The future looks very bright for St Peters Dunboyne if the talent on the 2014 minor squad is anything to go by. With the league title in the bag, Andy McEntee's charges faced surprise packets St Colmcilles in the championship final. Dunboyne struggled for long periods in this game and badly needed a spark from somewhere. That came from corner forward Conor Keeley. A goal from the penalty spot early in the second half and just when Colmcilles seemed to have the title in the bag Keeley got a second goal and the title was heading to Dunboyne.

The footballers of Trim finished 2014 with a bang. The clubs Under 21 batch claimed the 'A' championship while the minor followed up a week later with the Division 2 championship title. Seneschalstown were defeated 5-8 to 1-6 at Skryne. Cathal Bermingham was outstanding for the winners. Seneschalstown were held to just three points from play and the Trim centre back was central to this fine defensive display.

Cathal Bermingham (Trim), Patrick Byrne (Moynalty), Daire Rowe (Killary Emmets)  and Conor Keeley (St Peters Dunboyne)

Nobber and Blackwater Gaels served up a thriller in the Division 5 final at Pairc Tailteann. Larry McEntee's men were in control for most of this game. They held a 2-8 to 1-6 interval lead Blackwater narrowed that to a point after 10 minutes of the second half. The game was level, 3-11 each going in to the final minutes before Nobber added two points to clinch a 3-13 to 3-11 win. Team captain Sean Meade led the way for the winners. The county minor got the insurance point towards the end and his goal in the first half after a solo run from the middle of the park was one to treasure.

Killary Emmets and St Pats needed a replay to decide the destination of the Division 3 title. On both occasions Killary's Daire Rowe was the stand out performer. Rowe, despite been shadowed by 2 or 3 markers hit 1-6 in the drawn encounter and went on to produce another outstanding display in the replay kicking seven points in Killary's 2-13 to 2-9 win at Ashbourne.

Moynalty produced a very good minor team in 2014. The league title was won at the expense of Blackwater Gaels early in the season and a comfortable 3-9 to 0-5 was recorded over Duleek Bellewstown in early November in the Division 5 championship final. A real star for the future, Patrick Byrne, stood out in the decider for the winners. The half forward landed three points and popped up all over Pairc Tailteann for Joey Curley's team.
