U21FC A: Tones come good against Kells

October 26, 2014

Fiachra Ward Wolfe Tones

Wolfe Tones 3-13
Gaeil Colmcille 2-10

Although  assisted by a strong breeze in the first half  Wolfe Tones found a spirited Kells side difficult to break down and only held a 2 point lead after the first quarter 0-05 to 0-03.

The Tones scores coming from Thomas O Reilly (3), Niall O Reilly and Charlie Mc Garry while Seamus Mattimoe had registered 3 frees for Gaeil Colmcille. Thomas O Reilly was causing headaches for the Gael Colmcille defence and during this period was unlucky not to add 2 goals when through on goal. The first shot went narrowly wide while the second chance was saved by the Kells keeper. The second quarter was more rewarding for the Tones and goals from Fiachra Ward and Padraig Diamond put the Tones firmly in the driving seat. Gary Mc Fadden and Thomas O Reilly added further points to leave the Tones with a commanding half time lead of 2  08 to 0  05.

The Gaels opened the second half scoring with a point in the 31st minute. However Tones Fiachra Ward surged through the Kells defence and drove to the net almost immediately. Three further points from the Kells men wiped out that goal in as many minutes. Gary Mc Fadden replied for the Tones but this was answered by 1 01 from the Kells men to leave the score Tones 3  09 to 1  09 after the 3rd quarter. Three Thomas O Reilly frees opened up a 9 point lead for the Tones with just ten minutes remaining. Gaeil Colmcille showed admirable spirit and kept competing for the rest of the game and even though they pressed hard for the rest of the game they could only add 1  01 even though they created a number of goal chances while  Fiachra Ward added a point for the Tones.
