The celebrations begin for Donaghmore Ashbourne

Donaghmore/ Ashbourne 1-9
Drumree 0-6

The Donaghmore/ Ashbourne Camogie team completed an immediate return to the Intermediate ranks for next season by winning the Meath Junior Camogie Championship Final Replay on Sunday  with a convincing win over Drumree.

The foundation for this success was laid down in a determined first half display in which the Donaghmore/ Ashbourne ladies held Drumree to a 0-3 to 0-3 score line at half time. This was achieved despite playing in to a strong breeze. The workrate of the team was top class, particularly amongst the backs who, while under intense pressure from Drumree refused to allow any easy scores and repeatedly frustrated the Drumree forwards with hooks, blocks and ferocious tackling.

In the second half, with the winds on their backs, Donaghmore/ Ashbourne opened up the game with some free flowing camogie which resulted in some fine scores, most important of which was the goal from full forward Ali Fitzgearld. This was the score which gave some daylight between the teams for the first time.

While the final score line of 1-9 to 0-6 suggests that Donaghmore/ Ashbourne ladies were comfortable victors, the tension of the final ten minutes was plain to see for the supporters who travelled to Dunboyne. Again coming under severe pressure as Drumree frantically searched for the scores they needed the Donaghmore/ Ashbourne backs stuck to their task admirably with Emma Tormey in particular showing great leadership when it was needed most. Kathy Giblin, in goals, also showed great awareness at times when sweeping up behind her full back line and also contributed with her accurate and lenthy puck outs.

Donaghmore/ Ashbourne was also grateful for the tireless work of the midfield pairing of Roisin Williams and Liz Keegan who covered every blade of grass in their efforts for the team, both in attacking and defending when and where required.

The forwards also provided great work rate in not allowing an easy route out of trouble for any of the Drumree backs. In addition six forwards scored from play with points from Maggie Randall and Aideen Ferry notable for their skill and precision and also their timing following periods of Drumree pressure at the other end of the field.
