St Michaels 2-9
Walterstown 0-14

After the ladies championships were wrapped up over the weekend, Walterstown and St.Michaels returned to league action with a semi-final clash in Carlanstown.

St.Michaels had faced disappointment just a week earlier in their Intermediate semi-final clash against Simonstown and it seemed like they were determined not to face double disappointment by racing into a 1-03 to 0-0 lead after 16 minutes of this clash. It looked like St.Michaels were going to ease through the match however Walterstown eventually got off the mark on the 19th minute with a point from Alice Davis, Julie Donnellan, Molly Gray and Emily Davis added a further 3 points in the next 3 minutes to reduce St.Michaels lead to just 2 points. St.Michaels after their impressive start had gone 10 minutes without scoring before they extended their lead to 3 points with a point with 26 minutes gone on the clock.

Emily Davis again reduced the deficit to two points with the next point, however St.Michaels finished the half with 2 further points to leave the half time score - St.Michaels 1-06 v Walterstown 0-5.

Walterstown started the 2nd half the brightest with Emily Davis scoring the first 2 points off the half and sister Alice adding a further point to reduce the deficit to just one point. St.Michaels however followed this with a crucial 7 minute spell where they scored 1-03 without reply to extend their lead to 7 points.

Walterstown battled hard to get back in the game and finished the strongest with Emily Davis (0-3), Ellen Hennelly(0-1) and Molly Gray(0-1) adding 5 points to reduce the lead to just two points. In the dying moments Walterstown had a great goal chance however the shot went over the cross bar and time ran out on Walterstown with St.Michaels securing their place in the final with 2-09 to 0-14 win.

St Michaels Report

Full time .....St. Michaels 2-9, Walterstown 0-14.

Half time .....St. Michaels 1-6, Walterstown 0-5.

St. Michaels ladies edged out the ladies from Walterstown in an entertaining match played in Carlanstown last evening and in doing so booked themselves a place in the division 3 final.

In a contest in which the momentum never seemed to rest with one team for too long, the possession both teams enjoyed wasn't always made to count on the scoreboard. Walterstown however will lament the fact that they owned the ball for the final 10 minutes but they took the wrong options in front of goal and didn't take their goal chances and as a result Martin O'Connell's side lost out by a whisker.

A goal in either half by Marion Farrelly cemented St. Michaels place in the final and it was Christy Regan's side who started the brightest as Alicia Curtis tapped over the opening point from play on 4 minutes, this was followed 2 minutes later with the first of Farrelly's goals as she sent it to the top corner from 20 meters out. A point apiece from Patricia Owens and Aisleen Regan put St. Michaels into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Walterstown broke their duck on 19 minutes sending over their first point and with the bit between their teeth they now forged on registering 0-4 without reply to leave it 1-3 to 0-4 after 24 minutes play. Walterstown then had a player sin binned and while Marion Farrelly got the home sides next point, Walterstown replied immediately but a Sinead McCormack point and a converted free from Aisleen Regan put St. Michaels into a 1-6 to 0-5 half time lead.

Three unanswered points in the opening eight minutes of the second half reduced the deficit for Walterstown to just two points, but St. Michaels were undaunted and in the following 7 minutes they fired home 1-3 without reply to go back 2-9 to 0-8 in front as Aisleen Regan was first to split the posts followed by Sinead McCormack and a beauty from Erin McGrane and this was capped off by Marion Farrelly's second major on 47 minutes and was it for St. Michaels as far as scoring goes. Walterstown however never gave up and from the 49th minute to the final whistle they owned the ball firing home 6 unanswered points to bring it back to just a one point game, however time ran out on their brave comeback. The St. Michaels back division deserve plenty of credit for sticking to their task and when the chips were down they hassled and harried the opposing forwards giving them no time on the ball and were well served by Lorraine Curtis who kept a clean sheet and Marita Rogers, Mary Carpenter, Aine Sheridan, Mary Clinton, Fiona Nevin  and Hayley Doyle who did trojan work in front of goal.

St. Michaels team and scorers: Lorraine Curtis, Marita Rogers, Mary Clinton, Mary Carpenter, Áine Sheridan, Hayley Doyle, Fiona Nevin, Sinéad McCormack 0-2, Megan O'Brien, Marion Farrelly 2-1, Patricia Owens 0-1, Jillian Brogan, Alicia Curtis 0-1, Aisleen Regan 0-3, Erin McGrane 0-1.
Subs: Gillian Curtis for Alicia Curtis 44 minutes, Lauren Doyle for Mary Clinton 50 minutes.

Referee: Paul Mooney
