AFL1: Summerhill hold on for win

July 28, 2014

Dunshaughlin's Cathal O'Dwyer
Dunshaughlin 1-10
Summerhill 2-10

Meath Senior Champions Summerhill were the visitors as Dunshaughlin attempted to keep their quest for a place in the Div 1 league final alive in a match played in fresh conditions in south Meath Sunday evening.

Eoin Hagarty got the black and amber off to a great start with 2 fine scores in a row with the first a Hagarty special and the second a great team score that involved Conor Devereux and Tadhg O'Dushlaine. Team captain Ray Maloney was on hand 2 minutes to register his first score of the game before Summerhill finally got off the mark after 6 minutes from a Brian Ennis point. With Dunshaughlin enjoying some long periods of possession they will be kicking themselves for not generating some more scores but thankfully a Ben Duggan score following some good work from Tommy Johnson and a Conor Devereux point kept the scoreboard ticking over to have the home side leading by 4 points.

This proved however to be a false dawn sadly for Dunshaughlin as Summerhill finally imposed themselves on the game after 12 minutes to register the first goal of the game and this proved to be the spark they needed to register an unanswered 3 points to now have them leading by 4 points.

Dunshaughlin did finish the first half as they started following a nice Conor Devereux score to have Summerhill leading by a goal. 2 Summerhill points on the 35th and 35th minutes now had they leading by five before Eoin Hagarty for the third time of the night got Dunshaughlin back into the game before Summerhill pulled this score back to have them leading now by four points.

Dunshaughlin up to this point were not really showing any signs that they were going to be in contention for the 2 points but this was all to change when Cathal O'Dwyer launched an unstoppable shot into the Summerhill net to now have the bare minimum between the teams.

Summerhill however are holders of the Keegan cup for a reason and they once again showed great initiative and hunger to get their second goal of the game on the 46th minute to once again have them leading by 4 as the game was now entering its final quarter. Another Cathal O'Dwyer point was cancelled out by Summerhil before a beautifully converted Conor Devereux 45 ensured that Summerhill held on to win by 3 points. Best for Dunshaughlin were Ray Maloney, Eoin Hagarty, Conor Devereux and Cathal O'Dwyer.
